Wag the Dog, a political satire film, steps into a world where constructed and inter-subjective ideas are incredibly important. The film explores how ideas are constructed and how these ideas become reality through the acceptance by the masses and is an excellent demonstration of how identities, interests and institutions are inter-subjectively constructed. In the film, the president of the United States is up for re- election, however, a “Firefly” girl accuses him of sexual misconduct with just days before the election. In a desire to distract the media and the American public, a spin doctor and a famous Hollywood film producer set out to establish a lie that will detract the media and the American public from this scandal. Although Stanley, the producer, appears to hold a significant amount of power considering he position in orchestrating and producing much of the fictitious war, it is clear that Connie, the spin doctor, holds the true power. He is the one who decides to create the war with Albania in the first place and goes to Stanley only because of his prowess when it comes to film production. As the film goes on, Stanley has grand ideas to continue the lie, but is promptly shut down by Conrad. The decision-making power of Conrad comes to a head when it is him that gives the go ahead to the officials to take Stanley away after he tells Stanley he cannot take credit for the creation and production of the warto which Stanley reacts to with vitriol and anger. Stanley is then promptly “found” dead in his Hollywood mansion, which helps Connie keep the secret under …show more content…
