In the chapter one of The Willpower Instinct by Kelly McGonigal she describes the concept and the components of willpower. She writes that there are three different pieces of willpower. “I won’t” power, which helps you to resist temptation and encourages you to say no to everything you want to say yes. That can be a candy bar or a cocktail. “I will” power, your ability to do what you have to do, even if part of you does not want to do it and “I want” power, your motivation regarding what is truly matters. She writes about what is a true meaning of willpower and how humans need to value it more. The first chapter also talks about scientific basis of willpower. She talks about how complicated brain structure is, and how everybody needs to master …show more content…
The author explained evolution of a brain in a very easy and understandable way. She talks about scientific research in a compelling form and makes reading what could easily be boring text really engaging. I was taken by how simple she makes her writhing. Still, her words have merit and that makes reading her book quite enjoyable. She is talking about really interesting ways to understand one’s self in the first chapter of her book. The author is asking to look at what you do that causing you troubles in life and proposing different methods to change your ways. She is describing different aspects of human behavior and makes a case that it is important to know yourself. I agree with her statements and I think that everyone should work on their personality. I am constantly working to improve myself. For me, this chapter feels like a very good starter guide to improving life. I learned many useful strategies in the first chapter that I can implement in the near future. For example, the meditation guide proved to be really effective for me. The author proposing easy methods to change your perspective and get you out of the routine. Many people get stuck in some form, like bad habits or compulsive actions. I appreciated that this book offers some solutions to those who wants to get out from a swamp of the mundane. I was able to relate to the message of the first chapter of the book. McGonigal talks about how important it is to work on yourself. She states that any changes you made for the better will make positive difference in your life. Maybe you would not see results of those changes immediately, but they will affect you in the due time. I think that it is important to focus on the future and not live in the past or fix your attention on the present.
