An epic hero trait is shown as Odysseus was coming out to speak to the Phaeacian ladies, and Homer compares Odysseus to a “mountain lion” (103). Mountain lions are known for their strength, and a epic hero is a man of great strength, so Odysseus is proven once again by Homer to be an epic hero. Not to mention, Lions are the king of the jungle and get what they want because they are so robust. In the same fashion, Odysseus is the King of Ithaka and he gets what he wants because he too is powerful like a lion. Not only is Odysseus very strong, but Odysseus is very clever, and presents his cleverness by asserting to Nausicaa, that he has “never...laid eyes on equal beauty…” and “...[he thought of] a young palm tree…” (103). Odysseus is utilizing his cleverness to tell Nausicaa how beautiful she is and comparing Nausikaa to palm tree he saw once, just so Nausicaa can help him. An example of when Homer used epithets was when, “the grey-eyed goddess Athena made her tarry, so that Odysseus might behold her beauty and win her guidance to the town” (102). Athena foreshadows how she is going to help Odysseus like she had many times before, and Athena helps Odysseus by making Nausicaa help Odysseus. Additionally, Nausicaa is to provide hospitality and rest to Odysseus while he is in the Phaeacian island because Athena compelled Nausicaa to do so. Also, when Athena is called “the grey-eyed goddess Athena” it means she is about to do something helpful. Another example of an epithet used by Homer, is when Nausicaa was called, “white.” Nausicaa is “white” because of her royalty and is capable of helping Odysseus getting back home to Ithaka. Because Nausicaa is royalty and is able to aid Odysseus in getting back home to Ithaka, Athena uses Nausicaa to help Odysseus. Divine Intervention connects with the epithets because Athena helping is foreshadowed by the
