Abigail had a strong relationship with her friends until she threatened them. “Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you.” (Abigail P.26) This severed her relationship with her friends revealing to the audience that they only went along with her plan because of fear. This comment diminished her good name as her friends realised that she is not who they thought she was and see her dark side. The role of being a priest in a theocratic society gives Parris great power within the town even though he not very respected. “I must know it now, for surely my enemies will, and they will ruin me with it.” (Reverend Parris P.19) This again, illustrates how important a good name is as if anyone found out about the happenings in the forest Parris’ name would be tainted for being associated with witchcraft and thus would lose his position in the church and therefore his power.
