Death is a figure that watches over all aspects of human life astonished and disgusted by their wastefulness and kindness. He describes war as pointless and needless, he sees men running blindly to their death completely unaware of what they were running at. The tone in “who think they’re running at other young men. They are not. They are running at me.” Dictates his rather apathetic feelings towards war and needless process of collecting souls. He sees his responsibility as burden and describes it in a depressing manor.
