Essay On Superiority In Humor

Improved Essays
Do superiority and humor go hand in hand? Philosophers Kant, Schopenhouer, Darwin, and Baudelaire all have differing opinions when it comes to humor. However, there is a common theme among all of them. This common theme is the belief that a superior person creating humor out of something or someone inferior is what people find to be funny. This superiority of humor is demonstrated in multiple ways to this day through the use of media. This essay will discuss if there is truly superiority in humor, and if this superiority is necessarily bad. In my opinion, there is definitely superiority in humor - and while it could be considered bad, it is also simply human nature. In order to understand superiority in humor, one must first analyze the beliefs of philosophers that have discussed it. One of these philosophers is Kant. According to Kant, “Humour in the good sense means the talent of being able voluntarily to put oneself into certain mental disposition, in which …show more content…
Kant claims that humor in itself is when a person can put themselves in an inferior position to make another feel superior. Meanwhile, Schopenhouer states that when people find themselves to be inferior in any way, they more often than not laugh at themselves and create humor out of it. Darwin may not touch upon superiority in humor much, but he does touch upon how it is a normal part of human development and growth because it is seen in even the youngest of childen. Baudelaire, on the other hand, largely discusses superiority in humor. He strongly believes that superiority in humor is a bad thing. While I am not denying that superiority in humor can be bad, I believe that it is acceptable as long as it is not hurting someone. Humans wanting to feel superior than one another is natural, and humor can be the perfect outlet for this

The present study investigated the possible relationship between self-defeating humor and the use of humor as a coping strategy. It also predicts that the use of humor as a coping strategy is negatively correlated with self-defeating humor Meaning, for example, if an individual has a lower self-defeating humor score, the lower the usage of humor as a coping strategy. However, the results of the present study do not support the idea of a negative correlation. Instead, there is a weak, but significant positive correlation between self-defeating humor and the use of humor as a coping strategy, rather than the negative correlation between the two measures.…

There are many ways things can be humorous. To be considered humorous, however, a literature piece should have some aspects of humor in it. Dave Barry, an award winning author and columnist, wrote the very rhetorical “Dave Barry 's Manliness Manifesto”. Barry’s key to making his piece humorous was by using common humor elements; such as, satire and irony. Rachel Callman, a writer for Tosh.0, is the author of “Selfie’s Word of the Year Acceptance Speech,” which is a very satirical piece which depicts a stereotypical personification of the word selfie.…

Some subjects are considered dangerous or impossible to address formally or face to face. Therefore, that’s where humorists play a role. Alaine de Botton, author of “Status Anxiety,” believes that because humorists can say things that other people will not, they are there to convey messages that are too dangerous to state directly. Humorists, like ones on Saturday Night Live and in movies, use comedy and jokes to bring about difficult messages. Saturday Night Live (SNL) often uses satirical skits to convey a deeper message.…

Society, as a whole, is like a well-run clock. The combination of multiple different pieces, all with varying functions, all working together, and all serving unique roles produces a fantastically designed final product. Interestingly enough, our culture is analogous to the running of a time-keeping machine. Society also includes many different individuals who have personal beliefs and opinions, and each individual serves a vital purpose to the overall purpose of the group formed by these individuals. Alan de Botton, in his book Status Anxiety, argues that humorists are one of the most important individuals involved in our society, as they are able to deliver oftentimes controversial messages to their audiences.…

Although everybody enjoys a good laugh, I want to come back to the idea that laughter doesn’t belong in political matters. Often times, satire creates questioning of whether people are laughing with or at each other. This ambiguity accentuates the differences between two groups of people and raises the question of whether or not people are friends or…

    Essay On Humorists

Humorists Everyone has a different sense of humor, whether it’s sarcastic or even stupid. Some, like Alain de Botton, the author of the 2004 novel Status Anxiety, believe that humorists play a vital role in society; however, that role cannot be considered vital in society today. While some believe that humorists are vital because they are able to make insulting (and sometimes inappropriate) insinuations about others, having the ability to get away with such an atrocity is not necessarily a good idea. For example, even though the show Seinfeld is used to poke fun at some of the things people say, do or act like, they may take offense to some of the content on the show; a Cigar Store Indian, a ‘Sidler’, even a holiday that one of the characters…

Humor detracts from the existential dread of any suggestion, though it must be pulled off without a hitch or awkward pause. Misfired humor is the fodder of racist propaganda and horror stories. Needing to explain how jokes work marks one not just incompetent at humor, but also useless to society. To work, comedy may be subtly emphasized, must have multiple possible meanings, might teeter near the boundary to the unforgivable, and should balance the identity of the audience & butt of the joke with…

Research has even found that humor is beneficial to our health and that laughing can reduce people’s emotional and physical pain. However, the real question is: what makes things funny? In his TED talks speech, Peter McGraw answers this exact question by explaining his Benign Violation Theory to the audience. Overall, McGraw’s speech is effective in persuading his audience that his theory is valid because of his strong ethos factor, extensive use of logos, and his appeal to the audience’s pathos to explain his theory.…

The first of the three main theories of humor is the superiority theory. This theory can be basically understood by saying, “X is funny because it prompts apprehension of our superiority over others;” in other words, we laugh at something because we feel that we would handle the situation better. In Kingpin, the superiority theory explains moments of humor occurring when we – the audience - feel superior to Roy and Ishmael. When we see Roy after the destruction of his bowling career, we laugh at his inability to preform simple tasks.…

Everything comes with its natural imperfections, and humans, with their desire to make everything optimal, often judge or push for change. With this in mind, oftentimes, people must withhold these thoughts as they may come off as rude or even threatening. For example, in “The ‘F Word’” by Dumas, Dumas criticizes Americans and their lack of respect for other cultures and in his case, other cultures’ names. With such a critical message directed at his primary audience members, Americans, the readers would take offense and disregard much of what Dumas had to say. This is where the role of humorists emerge.…

Furthermore, Zinsser and Highet both explain why dramatic irony amuses the audience. According to Zinsser, a humorist allows readers to feel superior than the writer (Zinsser 227). Similarly, Highet argues, “Comedy and farce look askance and from below” (Highet 155). Dramatic irony in Lysistrata creates the relationship of the humorist and the humored by demeaning the characters to elevate the…

Comically Crude The line drawn between comedy and vulgar references have become blurred in today's society. A comedian may make a joke which offends a great body of people all for the purpose of making a few laugh. Famous comedians make a living off of exploiting both groups, and individual peoples, with derogatory comments in order to make large masses of money. In the past, comedians would cross social lines and force society forward using both obscene language and seemingly deranged or lewd topics.…

Comedies often provide laughter and entertainment while presenting social, political, philosophical, and theological ideas and problems. Within the comedy genre, satire presents itself in a form of sarcasm, irony and humor. It is the combination of entertainment and critique to criticize the ignorance of a person or society. It has a few elements: entertainment and critical reflection to awaken the audience and to address issues and questions. It does not seek to do harm, but it seeks the truth and its purpose is to create a reform (a change or improvement).…

Does comedy help promote social change? Ramon Lopez, Iain Ellis and the documentary Tickling Giants demonstrate how comedy has had some social change but has not had a positive impact on society nor promoted great social change. Ellis discusses about how The Talk Show brought about a change in society but not a positive change in which the comedian expected since the nation returned to where they started or even worse. While Lopez discuss how the comedian Jon Stewart does not promote positive social change but rather degrading change in society. I agree that comedy can have a social effect but disagree that comedians can bring about a positive change.…
