How have industry figures wielded their power in pop’s production and dissemination processes, and how have musicians responded? Making reference to relevant literature and one or more recordings from the period 1900-2000, discuss the problems of power and mediation as they apply to popular music history.
Industry figures have influenced the production and dissemination of popular music over the twentieth century in different ways. The production of popular music and its dissemination has evolved over time and musicians have responded according to cultural, social and political climate they are in. They were largely successful with numerous number one hits over three years. With famous artists like Kylie Minogue and Rick Astley. Stock Atkin and Watermans ’SAW’ ability to dominant the charts between 1987 and 1994 is a testament to power they wielded over this time. They were songwriters that were able to produce number 1 hits. Another form of power was the wealth they had inn order to propel an artists forward. Rick Astley’s success is another display of SAW production power. He had no previous success as an artists reached number 1 in 24 different countries.
