In Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck emphasizes the idea that power makes us meaner. When Curly gains George and Lennie’s attention he keeps them in his grasp by gossiping about Curly and his wife stating “Know what I think?’ …”Well, I think Curley’s married. . . a tart.” (Steinbeck, 26). Gossiping about others is used to show that you are more powerfil than them. When Curly does not hold power over others he is meek and obedient to them, for instance, he lets the others kill his dog, and does not stop them, but when Curly gains power over others he acts like another person gossiping about others when he normally does not talk.
