A subtle, yet important theme in Mark Twain’s Eve’s Diary is power. Both Adam and Even display power over one another. Adam’s silent treatment saddens Eve while Eve’s inquisitive curiosity scares Adam. Mark Twain hides power in this story, but it’s importance can’t be denied. The definition of power is the ability to direct or influence the behavior of others or the course of events. Based on this definition, Eve displayed power over Adam with her curiosity. At the beginning of the story, Eve followed Adam for several hours, which frightened him, In fear, he ran up a tree and stayed there. Eve influenced the behavior of Adam by stalking him for a long time. Adam showed his power in an interested way. He decided to say nothing. Throughout
