Power is not only taken, but it’s magnified into control and totalitarian behavior. Political leaders who are corrupted can use their powers to their own benefit. George Orwell the author of Animal Farm portray this idea by the character of Napoleon. Napoleon is the main character in the fable Animal Farm. Orwell expresses the tyranny behavior that is seen through this character, Napoleon. Orwell shows that power corrupts those who possess it by his oppressive, dictatorial and selfish behavior.
As he distance himself from the others, Napoleon becomes more and more like a human. The original thought of the rebellion is to show unity among all animals, including Napoleon. But in his increasing desire for power, he clearly displays that he (and most pigs) require better nourishment and living conditions than the other animals. He raises and instructs puppies who will become his secret police He ousts Snowball from the farm so he can have more power. Napoleon also has Squealer occasionally change the commandments of Animalism to suit his growing

Napoleon not only restricted the freedom of the animals, but left most to starve while those whom he favors enjoys the luxury of doing human activities. As shown through these quotes, “For days a time the animals had nothing to eat but chaff and mangels. Starvation seemed to stare them in the face.” (74) “Once again all rations were reduced, except those of the pigs and the dogs.” (112). Napoleon also refuses to have any inputs or ideas for Animal Farm. When the topic of the windmill presented itself by Snowball, Napoleon waved the idea off as completely useless. Later on, when Snowball is exiled from the farm, Napoleon steals the idea and claims that the idea was never Snowball’s in the first place.Napoleon continued to gain more and more power on the farm for his own selfish
