Power from Pain
True power can be seen as many things, but power from pain brings the strength that not all people have. Experiencing hardships brings about power and wisdom that makes one stronger. Greek Mythology has many heroes that go through trials that make them stronger or better in some aspect. Hercules who was already strong from being part god, but he went through trials that made him better and not just in strength but he gained power. Odysseus, who was trapped, had to go through trials also. He dealt with monsters like hercules did but other things like greed. His suffering was less from trials and more from the pains of war.“When Achilles was born, his mother wanted to make him immortal and thus, dipped him in the river Styx. However, she did not realise that his heel, by which she held him, was not touched by the waters, and so that was the only part of his body that remained mortal.” He was made immortal but like Hercules went through pains and lost which helped him grow even if it wasn’t enough.In the battle Achilles was told to give up his servant because someone of a higher rank lost his. “Achilles, furious that he was dishonoured in such a way, withdraws from battle and asks his mother to convince Zeus to help the Trojans, so that he may prove himself again in the battlefield.” After being seen as weaker, Achilles went back to battle to prove himself and be better. In the battle he switched with his friend as a ruse. “The Trojans manage to repel the Greeks back to the shore; Patroclus, Achilles’ friend, wearing Achilles’ armor, successfully leads the Myrmidons against the enemy, but is subsequently killed by Hector, the Trojan prince. Enraged by his friend’s death, Achilles joins the battle and tracks down Hector, whom he kills in a face to face duel.” Heart struck by his friend’s death he attacked out of revenge and killed his friend’s killer. Odysseus’s trials had threats and dangers during his voyage and some of those dangers caused suffering which he was able to grow from. “The encounter with the Cicones was Odysseus’ first trial. Odysseus and his crew robbed and destroyed the town of Cicone. Who reorganized and collected support to attack Odysseus’ ill-equipped soldiers. This assault taught him a significant lesson that never become greedy in success.” Having stolen and lost he learned to not be greedy and be weary with success. “The most complicated trial of Odysseus was his encounter with the Cyclops. He must break away from Polyphemus’ cave and kill Polyphemus during sleep but he could not push the sealed rock because only Cyclops was the ones to remove it. The power of Cyclops was immense for Odysseus, so he was compelled to cheat to run away from his death. Formerly, Odysseus employed his shrewdness as a supplement to his grand encounter competence; eventually, though, he trusted on his remarkable corporal power.” Trusting his power lead to failure so Odysseus rethinked and chose to follow through with a smart plan instead of just strength. “The most prominent trial of Odysseus was his encounter with the Sirens. He was physically confined by Sirens who allured him through singing. He did not possess power to oppose them.” The sirens caused him to lose his self-control and rely on his crew. He dealt
