Power-filled or Peace-filled? By Deirdre McIlroy-Young

“Knowledge is power and ignorance is bliss”.

These are two well known sayings that are commonly put together. But is there any truth behind these words?

These concepts are very true, but the wording needs to be changed for the first phrase. Knowledge paired with understanding is power, and ignorance is bliss.

For if someone has all the knowledge in the world, but no understanding of what the ideas floating in their head mean, then would they have power? No. They would have a headache. But if that same person were to gain a deep understanding of the world’s knowledge, then not only would they know everything about the American government, but they would know exactly where to push to make it all come crumbling down. That’s power.

The USA won. But in the end the Germans fell without the use of this horrendous weapon. Yet still the Japanese remained, but for how much longer? Almost seventy years ago the first atomic bomb was dropped on a sleeping Japanese city. By the end of the war between 100 000 and 150 000 civilians were dead. Imagine the person who gave the final order to drop these bombs. Imagine the people who made the bombs. Imagine what they felt, hearing about the damage that they had helped to cause. These Americans had the knowledge about the damage that the atomic bombs would cause. Together they had the power to prevent the death of tens of thousands. If I had that weight on my shoulders I would live a life with the shadow of grief looming over

Many people live by the phrase “knowledge is power” while others comfortably believe in the saying “ignorance is bliss”. According to Juan D. Carrillo and Thomas Mariotti, some people would rather be ignorant because “voluntary ignorance [can] be used as a self-control device preventing the individual from embarking in a hazardous activity which he [or she] could later regret,” (Carillo and Mariotti 1). These people believe that ignorance is truly blissful because knowing an abundant amount of information about a topic, or even a person, can be severely detrimental on the state of mind. One of these fervent believers is Daisy Buchanan, a major character in the novel The Great Gatsby by Scott Fitzgerald.…

One of the reasons the bombs should have been dropped is the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The United States and Japan were at peace until Japan bombed a military base in Hawaii and afterward, president Franklin D. Roosevelt declared war on Japan. In his well-known infamy speech, FDR stated, “I ask that the Congress declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by Japan on Sunday, December 7th, 1941, a state of war has existed between the United States and the Japanese empire.” America and its people saw the bombing as an act of war and in return, they declared war.…
