Power And Corruption And Power
Researchers have shown that there are five distinct types of power. Those types of power are Coercive, Expert, Referent, Legitimate, and Reward. With that power is thought to be, “ the capacity to produce effects on others, or the potential to influence others” (Hughes, Ginnett, and Curphy, 2015). Corruption is considered to be “ an act that leads to the diminishment in trust or business climate” (Ray, 2011). 2 Corinthians 12:9 enforces this point when it states, “And he said unto me, my grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me” (KJV, 2001). Furthermore, power doe not corrupt the power-holder but it is believed that the influence of the individual with power is what ultimately corrupts the individual. However, there are several instances that can occur where an individual’s influence is not considered leadership. With leadership being defined as, “an individual who faces dilemmas but maintains a strong ethnical, moral, and selfless grounding regardless of the situation” (Hughes, Ginnett, and Curphy, 2015). Furthermore, some of the instances that might occur where and individual might exhume more influence but is not considered a leader would be, if an individual were trying to get their child or significant other to stop smoking but that individual himself can not stop
