Power And Authority In George Orwell's Animal Farm

In the beginning of the novel “Animal Farm” by George Orwell, the animals wanted to get rid of the humans, because they thought it would solve all of their problems. Although getting the humans off of the farm did solve some of the problems, it also made some issues worse. The pigs took this opportunity to take power and be the dominant species on the farm. The animals did at one point have equal authority at the start of the rebellion, but as the novel progressed that changed. The pigs increased their authority more and more each day. The quote “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely”(John Acton), applies to the pigs since they were the only ones with power and authority, and since they were the ones who ultimately …show more content…
First Old Major gathered all of the animals in the barn for a meeting, and he brought up many thoughts he had about the awful lives of the animals. “We are born, we are given just so much food as will keep the breath in our bodies, and those of us who are capable of it are formed to work to the last atom of our strength; and the very instant that our usefulness has come to an end we are slaughtered with hideous cruelty”(Orwell 7). After Old Major’s speech, the animals knew that they needed to do something, not just for them but for the future generations. This was when Old Major and the animals came up with the idea of a rebellion. Old Major said “That is my message to …show more content…
Every day the pigs started to act more and more like the humans. It started when they began to wear clothing. “It did not seem strange when Napoleon was seen strolling in the farmhouse garden with a pipe in his mouth–no, not even when the pigs took Mr. Jones's clothes out of the wardrobes and put them on, Napoleon himself appearing in a black coat, rat catcher breeches, and leather leggings”(Orwell 135). In addition to this, they began to walk on two legs. When the animals saw this they were puzzled. Clover is the first one to realize this, when she said “It was a pig walking on two legs”(Orwell 132). At first this wasn't not accepted because the animals always thought that anything that walked upon two legs was an enemy, but they were so brainwashed by the end, that they just accepted anything that the pigs did. At the very end of the book the animals could not tell the difference between the pigs and the humans. “Twelve voices were shouting in anger, and they were all alike”(Orwell 141). When the animals looked in the farmhouse they saw the pigs drinking beer and play cards with the humans. This was against the whole purpose of the rebellion, which originally intended to get rid of all of the humans. Instead of doing this, the pigs ended up trying to become just like the humans. Finally, the animals realized what

To begin with, the first sighting of the lack of education the animals posses is when Napoleon starts to control them. The animals were so absent minded to realize that Napoleon was building a pyramid, and placing everyone below him. For example, in the novel, it states “Napoleon denounced such ideas as contrary to the spirit of Animalism. The true happiness he said , lay in hard work and living frugally,” (Chapter 10, Pg 107). With this action taking place, it shows that Napoleon took advantage of the dictatorship and used it to his own well being instead of properly leading them.…

The pigs achieved control by reinforcing the idea that they were the only animals who could properly lead the farm, separating themselves as the ´brains’. This then leads the pigs, and even the other animals, into believing that they are above others. For example, the pigs would make every decision while the others did the heavy lifting as Illustrated in the quote “The pigs did not actually work, but directed and supervised the others. With their superior knowledge it was natural that they should assume the leadership”. This shows how the pigs made the farm animals believe that it was only natural for the pigs to make all the decisions.…

In George Orwell’s novel “Animal Farm”, the pig to human transition represents how failed revolutions only end up worse than their predecessors. With Napoleon, there is an increase in dealing with humans, even though the goal of the farm is to be run by animals. The original seven commandments are constantly being modified to fit the pigs agenda. On top of all this, the living conditions get progressively worse and the animals must work harder than before. The name change from Manor Farm to Animal Farm was supposed to represent the animals taking control of the farm, but, the pigs end up mimicking human behaviours after becoming the leaders.…

“At the foot of the end wall of the big barn, where the Seven Commandments were written, there lay a ladder broken in two pieces. Squealer, temporarily stunned, was sprawling beside it, and near at the hand there lay a lantern, a paintbrush and an overturned pot of white paint” (Orwell 73). This is to make the pigs seem like they are still abiding by the commandments, when in reality they are exploiting the commandments to suit themselves. They no longer care about Animalism as they cease to benefit from this philosophy. The pigs, who have become the leaders due to their manifest intelligence, have become what they resented from the start.…
