P.O.W 14
Pool Problem
Kainoa Harada

Problem Statement: The problem in this P.O.W is to find a formula to find how many times a ball would rebound off a table, with varying squares and rectangles to take into equation. Though there can be two separate formulas for each figure. And if you believe, there is a SUPER FORMULA that a group can find once every school year...

Process: The process I, and my group, used to solve this problem was simply counting the height and width then drawing the lines the pool ball would travel. Once it hit a whole that would mark the end of the line counting, and however many lines, while using our formula, is the amount of rebounds that figure had. The book backs this up with showing the rebounds of a rectangle,

With all of this said, are there any real life scenarios where we could benefit from the knowledge acquired from The Monty Hall Problem and hence similarly, from Simon’s Problem? Firstly, the Monty Hall Problem originated from a real show ‘Let’s Make a Deal’ and hence does or did have significance in the real world. We can also take the Monty Hall Problem as an extremely oversimplified example or real world problems that arise when people must make decisions based on uncertainties. Common examples of this arise in poker, stock market trading, corporate finance. What all these problems have in common is that once the ‘contestant’ receives new information (i.e. a door is opened, a new card is placed, a sudden fluctuation in market prices indicating…

The laws laid out in the Longhouse Religion are similar to the commandments handed down by the Christian prophet, Moses.11 Both were received through divine communications that no one else was privy to, both are non-negotiable and to be followed to the letter, both prohibit harmful behaviors, and both are specific to the people receiving these edicts. The Christian commandments are for the chosen people, who reside under the authority of the male head of household. Handsome Lake’s Code, however, was modeled after Hammurabi’s Code even though the tenants were influenced by local Christian missionaries.12 Like the Ten Commandments, Handsome Lake 's codes are similarly addressed to a chosen people, but not through a head-of-household. Instead,…

Forty Chances by Howard G. Buffett gave me an interesting insight into the problems of the world. People in other countries, especially the countries in Africa have such different lives. These people have grown up and live in such a different way than we have, and do in the United States. In South Africa, people have a different view of life, in the sense that we are always rushing through life where they seem to be calmly enjoying the ride. While we are enjoying almost every convenience, the people of the South Sudan are wondering if they will receive the food the NGOs send them.…

Baseball is a game of speed, despite not having a game clock, play clock, or any other sort of time constraints. The difference between being called out and safe can be determined by a fraction of a second. That call could be the difference between winning and losing a game. If you spend twenty minutes at any high school, collegiate, semi-pro, or professional baseball team’s facility, you will see coaches with stop watches timing players running, throwing, and transferring the ball. Coaches and players are constantly working on improving their times in order to execute defensive plays more efficiently, which will result in more put outs.…

How hard could it be to stand up on a board? Well, this first experience gave way to my development of mental persistence. It was the intense inclination to make it out to the lineup that thrust my mind into a trance, cultivating my curiosity for the prediction of what was to come. I was mindful of direction, and although my arms tired of pulling dense liquid through and through, it seemed like I had a duration of time just long enough to fathom the beauty of the sun hitting the water so as to make it seem like stars were dancing on the surface. I had time to consider the flow and direction of water and how rejuvenating the salt water felt on my skin, and to ponder the movement of water and how it firmly pushed against the board trying to send me back to shore.…

In 1874, a man named Major Walter Wingfield earned the rights to the game of Tennis, including the rules and all of the equipment that went along with it. As soon as he gained the rights to tennis, the first tennis court was built in the United States, paving the way for tennis to become popular in many other countries including China, Canada and Russia. At this time, and as time passed for quite a few years, the racket did not undergo many changes and it stayed wooden for approximately one hundred years. The wooden rackets made playing tennis very difficult because of the strength needed to hit the ball with such heavy frames. When a company called Wilson realized the inefficiency of these wooden rackets they developed a lighter and more advanced racket, which was made out of thin metal, allowing players to use more power with less effort.…
