Community Action Agencies were created after the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 was developed by President Lyndon Johnson to address the problem of poverty in America. Since then, parts of our government have wanted to cut funding and eliminate programs that help fight the war on poverty. Community Action programs should continue to be funded through our government to help improve the lives of families living in poverty though heating assistance, health and safety measures and education of young children.

The LIHEAP program runs from November 1st through April 30th every year. This time frame is the heating season. The LIHEAP program helps the most vulnerable people keep their home warm during the coldest months of the year. When a household applies and qualifies for assistance, these families and individuals are protected under Moratorium. The Moratorium law states the utility service provider cannot shut off utilities for any household that has applied and qualified for LIHEAP assistance during the time frame of November 1 thru April 1 in Iowa. The LIHEAP program targets households that have an income of 175% and/or below the poverty guidelines. A majority of these people are the elderly, disabled and families with young children. In 2015, data provided by all 50 states and the District of Columbia showed that an estimated 1.7 billion dollars was used for heating assistance. …show more content…
Even though these programs are funded through our government, I believe it is something that should be continued. I currently work for Northeast Iowa Community Action and have seen the impacts these programs have on the elderly, disabled and children in the community. If these individuals and families did not have this help, it could be detrimental to their liveliness. There are somethings I would change to make it better, but with all things that takes time and getting through to the people in the state capital and Washington DC.
