Poverty Rate: DADS Belton

Growing up I never thought that I was in poverty, but according to the census 1,282 white families in my area are considered impoverished, and the wage my dad made fell below the poverty line. I always had nice clothes, my belly was full, and I had a roof over my head, even if it was comparable to a shack. The percentage of individuals below the poverty level in Belton is 12.2%, Belton has a population of 27,260 which makes it roughly 2,600 people who are living in poverty. Although compared to 27,260 people 2,600 may not seem like a lot, but looking at that number made me think, what can be done about this number, and how can we decrease it (DADS Belton? Johnson County consists of 544,179 people, which is a considerably larger number than Cass County, and Wyandotte County. Johnson county has a poverty percentage of 6.6 percent. In addition to a low poverty rate in Johnson county, 95 percent of residents in the county graduate high school. Poverty plays a huge role in injuries both in daily living and the work place. A study was done to collect date on the amount of people injured who were also impoverished. The data found in the study provides complete pooled annual mortality and population counts by age, sex, race/ethnicity, and cause of death at the county level. Cause of death is coded in accordance with the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems.45.25 percent of injured people in 2012 due to unintentional accidents lived in counties with a poverty level at or above 20 percent, 32.59 percent were black (Karb, Fleegler 6), Minorities who are doing harder work, such a construction jobs are more likely to be injured. The people who are working these jobs are overworked and underpaid but they’re doing the best they can. So that less people are overworked and underpaid, the minimum wage needs to be made a living wage. With a higher wage, and more job opportunities for minorities more people will be working and less will be depending on the system due to having enough money to afford the basic needs in life. An increase in quality of life for minorities will be beneficial for all races, ethnicities, and ages. Poverty is an ongoing issue, and I believe it will take a complete crash of the market, as the American people saw in the Great Depression and almost in 2008
