NGOS/Charities

When it comes to NGOS, charities and organizations everything appears really black and white. I feel that media really portrays it as that way. So I decided to put it in color and bring out some facts by providing certain certain incidents that take place in these groups. I feel that it is very important to do research before donating. In your mind you may think this money is going to individuals in need but in reality these groups may be using it for their own benefit. It is difficult to find the truth because media only brings forward “positive “ things about that organization. Majority of these organization run by the idea of “out of sight, out of mind”. Since they know no one’s going to ask because they have a “charity

Poverty porn is any type of media that is photographed, filmed or in written content to exploit the poor’s poverty to gain sympathy to earn donations. This exploitation is used to lure the public in. I personally see this as dehumanizing and a sign of oppression. It’s not fair for the individuals in poverty to have some organization treat them even worse just so they can make an appeal and name for themselves. I see this as a profit and propaganda from the organization’s side. In the article by CNN, “The dangers of poverty porn”, Nathalie Dortonne states, “Poverty porn is a tactic used by nonprofits and charity organizations to gain empathy and contribution from donors by showing exploitative imagery of people living in destitute conditions.” These tactics go in the depth of exploring these oppressive conditions. Further on Dortonne writes, “It leaves many of us feeling uncomfortable, disconnected and guilty --conflicted between turning a blind eye and reposting these pictures in hopes that sharing images of human suffering will enlighten others about poverty.” Poverty porn explores these regions because because it is a fast and easy way to get a reaction from the public. I feel that poverty porn also uses a marketing technique to make those in poverty look worse. This is a cruel way to oppress these individuals that are already going through …show more content…
It is well known for becoming a participant when disaster strikes. This organization is not only involved in the United States but also globally. This organization claims to provide relief and hope for those in need. Throughout the years it has been involved in many scandals. In the article, “ How efficiently is your charity donation spent?”, Don D’cruz states, “What Red Cross did was what every aid group does. It saw a crisis overseas, in the case surrounding the terrorist bombings in Bali, and it launched an appeal, raised a pile of money, but expected few questions to be asked about how it was going to be spent. Usually, no-one asks because those affected are out of sight and out of mind”. This statement defines how majority of the charities and organizations react on when they lend a “helping

United States charities that aid countries in poverty are not often helping those countries the way they should be doing so. For Example, when America gave Haiti supplies such as food, clothes and shoes they may have helped Haiti’s immediate issue but when they gave Haiti all of these things it made it difficult for businesses to sell something that could be obtained without purchase. The solution to Haiti’s lack of supplies shouldn’t be solved by dumping bulk items that ruin their market but by assisting them financially in a way to set them up for success in the future. In the documentary Poverty Inc. there was a discussion pertaining Tom’s Shoes.…

Poverty in America is a real issue, and the way we portray it is all wrong. The essay "Changing the Face of Poverty" written by Diana George talks about the problems of how nonprofits misrepresent the face of poverty in America. Most organizations put out flyers and adds that make the needy look like there from the depression era with rags and dirt smudges covering their faces. This is not a true representation of what poverty looks like in America. Most people think that the poor are easy to point out because of what they have seen in advertisements.…

A large portion of the public does not understand why people live in poverty, and believe it is because they do not work hard enough; but this is simply not true. There are countless causes of poverty that people do not often recognize such as, inadequate job opportunities (especially in inner cities), lack of education, being raised in poverty as a child, mental and physical illness or disease, and many others. Poverty is often the root to other social problems as well such as crime, drugs, and the prison system, to just name a few. People or families who are living in poverty and do not have enough money to survive often turn to crime because they see no other options. With a lack of jobs in inner cities, there are often no way for these people to make enough money to eat other than selling drugs.…
