From time immemorial, poverty has continuously been a feature of society although some wealthy minorities did exist as well. It is evident in today’s societies that poverty is a social phenomenon and a serious problem just like it has been in the past.
In order to address this social phenomenon called poverty, an Islamic concept of Waqf which has its root during the time of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW), when ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab acquired a piece of land, and asked the Prophet, peace be upon him, how best to use it, the Prophet advised him to establish it as waqf: “make the land inalienable (unable to be sold or given away), and give its profit away as charity” can be used in alleviating poverty in the society ("Waqf - Endowment - Charity in Islam | Islamic Relief UK", 2016).

In Islamic terms, Waqf refers to a religious endowment i.e. a voluntary and irrevocable dedication of one’s wealth or a portion of it – in cash or kind (such as a house or a garden), and its disbursement for shariah compliant projects (such as mosques or religious schools…) ("General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments - UAE", 2016).
