Apartheid
Ever since the beinning of Apartheid, people of colour were forced to move to rural areas and build their own house there. Not many people had the sufficient funds to build proper houses so they had to find other alternatives and this led to the increase of poverty. This historical cause links in with Chronic Poverty.
2. Inequality
Since women didn’t have many rights in the past, the men were the only ones bringing in the income. It was hard for women to acquire jobs that would bring in more income especially when they have children and the children can’t go to school.
3. Not many people in the past had stable, well paying jobs. There are cases where people lost their jobs and had to rely on other means to live. Also the lack of education contributed to the unemployment issue because people didn’t have the knowledge and skills needed for the job.
However the government and other organisations have come up with solutions to help mitigate poverty in our country.
The government created this programme known as Expanded Public Works Programme with 3 Phases. Poverty stricken communities would get involved with government work and programmes to earn income and to relieve the poverty threat. For Phase 1, it was implemented in April 2004 for a 5 year period and its aim was to promote the economy and sustainable growth. During this phase, the programme surpassed the set target of creating 1 million work opportunities to 1.6 million opportunities 1 year ahead of the set
