Slumdog Millionaire: Poverty Porn or Not?

Each and every day millions of people all over the world are traveling from one country to another. Whether by car, plane, boat, or even by foot they are experiencing new countries, cultures, religions, and entirely different ways of life. However, for a majority of the people this is not possible so they are limited to experiencing these countries, cultures, and religions in the life of a television screen or by reading a book. When this happens people may have a tendency to portray countries and their people in a way that might not be representative of reality. Ever since Slumdog Millionaire has come out in 2008 arguments have been

The way the movie Slumdog Millionaire portrays urban poverty has been one of the most heated controversies by glamorizing the poor, poverty, and the slums of India. Although the portrayal of the lives in urban slums is the nature of the film, this story of an orphan from the slum ends up raising awareness all over the world on the issue of poverty far better than the documentary films or the articles that we read in the newspaper. While the movie got famous in the United States and was high praised, its view in India, where poverty is a part of everyday reality, was not received the best. The major hit against the film cites the use of the coined term "slumdog" that describes the people of the slums. People were very upset that they were associated along side a dog because they thought it was very derogatory toward the human race. No matter what the debates are about the film, I think it is a good sign in the right …show more content…
I hear bits and pieces of unforgettable stories, as drastic as the ones seen in the movies. On all accounts, then, Slumdog Millionaire is a piece of India that should always be remembered. It is a reminder of the uneasy reality, which drives people to take action towards a better society. Likewise, I hope that the current global attention to poverty will not fade away, but take a bigger step, because if people have the drive to end poverty, we can bring a genuine change in the lives of many people and their

Katherine Boo’s Behind the Beautiful Forevers focuses on the struggles of Annawadi’s residents as many of them attempt to create a better life for their families. A small slum located near the Mumbai airport, Annawadi highlights the juxtaposition of an Indian underclass and the growing economy of the country around them. While so many of these families, through an expanding global market economy, can see the benefits of globalization and capitalism, the potential upsides of these systems maintain out of reach as most Annawadians deal with the harsher realities of poverty, hunger, and exploitation. As the text looks into many aspects of daily life in a particular slum between 2007 and 2011, a debilitating connection can be seen between capitalism…

The story takes place in Mumbai, India. Westernized trade has increased over the past few decades, but this has taken a toll on the people in one of India's major cities, Mumbai. Annawadians will do anything to get out of the slum and into the middle class, even if it means breaking the law and hurting their neighbors. Furthermore, many people envy one another for their worth and accomplishments.…

This clearly shows the comparison between open space of air traffic with the thin overfilled and jammed lanes in the slum. This scene in the movie shows that the infuriated security guards understood the aspects of slums that they are not aware of. This is the physical structure of the slum from which the guards and police are estranged, regardless of their everyday happenstance with it. Salaam Bombay’s opening scene shows how slum is disorganized and messy with everything muddled up.…

Katherine Boo not only describes unhappiness and poverty in Annawadi but also shows how structural poverty and inequality produced by globalization regulate the life in “Behind the beautiful forevers”. Global market capitalism strikes the root of the poor people’s anxious lives who suffer from worldwide economic slump, non-regular workforce, and the rat race. Annawadi is a slum of Mumbai in India and is surrounded by the airport and five splendid hotels. It is hard for Annawadians to get jobs in the big city so they dig up waste and sell recyclable trash for living. Abdul’s younger brother, Mirchi, put it “Everything around us is roses and we’re the shit in between (Prologue, p.xii).”…

There is a much more apparent gap in the rich and the poor in today’s society and many individuals involved in closing this gap are defined as heroes. For example, Mother Teresa, who was recently sainted, worked with the poor, providing them with aid, food, water and hope. These are the hero’s that today’s society recognises which is reflected in the film. A Marxists reading would evaluate Slumdog Millionaire based on the Indian Class system. India is known for stricken poverty throughout its nation.…

Lancaster wrote this piece attempting to invoke understanding about Dharavi.…

In the slums of Mumbai, India, in a half acre in the shadows of Mumbai International Airport, resides the city of Annawadi. A poor place, where children wander trash heaps in search of something valuable to sell so that they may have a mouthful of food. Yet, the city is a place of rising hope because of the affluence that is slowly spreading through India. Katherine Boo is a reporter, trying to spread awareness in her book “Behind the Beautiful Forevers” that extreme poverty has not been eliminated and, as George Orwell would say, “[push] the world in a certain direction” so that attention is called to extreme poverty. To push her ideas, Boo uses appeal to emotion, comparisons, and details to assert her want of better living conditions for…

Abandonment: Sunil’s Drive to Survive in Behind the Beautiful Forevers Behind the Beautiful Forevers, by Katherine Boo, records the quotidian lives of interconnected residents in Annawadi, a Mumbai slum. In this “under city”(Boo, xii) , we are introduced to individuals fighting the recursive loop of poverty. Boo depicts this reality as both a disturbing and moving testament to the hope and strength of individuals living in desperation. The juxtaposition of the glinting glass of airports and bustling hotels abutting the slums of Annawadi lends itself to seduction, providing Annawadians with optimism that “the future would look nothing like the past” (xvii).…

The poor in American Society are the victims of the social theory referred to as CONFLICT THEORY. The theory explains that the social STRATIFICTION SYSTEM is not functioning properly and the rich benefit more from the governmental decisions at the expense of the disadvantaged, those who rightly need the assistance. This theory is shockingly apparent in the Frontline documentary “Poor Kids”. This film follows the lives of three families’ struggling to deal with life’s most crippling situations the best way they can. The film demonstrates that being poor is not always a question of a PERSONAL PROBLEM related to the ABUSE of drugs or alcohol, but of a SOCIAL PROBLEM with unemployment, lack of job opportunities, and in this particular film, recession.…
