In the beginning of “Flavio’s Home” Parks is in Rio de Janeiro for a photographic work where he meets Flavio who is twelve years old. At this time he was doing an essay about Poverty therefore he and Jose Gallo a reporter followed him. When they arrived to his home they realized it was a shack where the ceiling was rusted and falling apart, when Flavio offered them a box to sit because they had no furniture but a bed and a broken crib. Soon after he meet all his siblings that were being watched by Flavio, he then was preparing dinner by washing rice and not wasting water washed Zaccaria’s feet his brother even though the water was dirty everyone was order to wash up. Parks uses pathos, ethos and imagery to argue his case about Poverty, but his strongest is pathos and imagery. Parks uses pathos to move and control your emotions and feel sympathy towards the child Flavio and feel what Parks felt when seeing this boy and hearing that he would only have one more year to live. He also uses imagery very efficiently as well in the essay when describing the “ sagging bed and a broken baby's crib” the reader can visualize the scene of his home as well as sympathy towards the child and his environment.(Parks
