According to the website FeedingAmerica.org, statistics issued in 2015 show that in the United States there are 43.1 million people that live in poverty. Of those 43.1 million, 24.4 million are between ages 18-64, 14.5 million are children under the age of 18, and 4.2 million are senior citizens 65 years of age or older living in poverty. Today more than before, schools and education remains the key to escaping poverty, while poverty remains the biggest obstacle to education. There is a large number of students attending schools in high poverty communities who require support in many ways. Often times the teachers are at loss of how to help meet the students’ needs because of the many problems they come to school with already. With factors such as limited social mobility, stressful living conditions, poor education, and a lack of opportunities to exit poverty, a simple math problem turns into a burden instead of an opportunity. Ultimately, schooling is the key to breaking this cycle of poverty. Schools in communities of poverty deserve the bare essentials when it comes to education, such as high qualified teachers, text books, and safe facilities to concentrate only on schooling and nothing outside of it. When a community is ran successfully it will grow because the people living in it will grow and education can contribute to that. It is important to note that children of poverty do not have broken brains or limited intelligence.
