There are 3 main characters in Trash: Rat, Gardo and Raphael who were all born in poverty. Only someone living in poverty that has no choice would search a rubbish dump to get new clothes “Half the stuff we wear is what we found, but most we pile up, weigh and sell”. Andy Mulligan encourages the readers to feel sympathetic and that the only way the community of Behala makes money is by selling their goods they have scavenged in the piles of rubbish in their backyard. Raphael and the kids that live in Behala are dressed by the rubbish that they are surrounded by.
Rat was born into poverty, which made it very hard for him to escape that cycle. “He lives with the rats and had come to look like one” the use of the simile implies Rat acts like a rat. Andy Mulligan has given Rat, rat like qualities to inform the audience that he is small, thin, fast and allows the readers to visualise the dark squalor that is Rat’s shelter. Can you imagine yourself searching for a place to live, not knowing what’s in there?
