Poverty is a global issue; it does not have a target or name written on it. I realize that poverty does not just affect a specific social group, race, or community. The United States of America is considered the land of the free; however, I view it as the land of working and oblivious people. The phrase often used in the U. S. is “Money makes the world go around” or “survival of the fittest.” These phrases are used to express American’s hunger for making money and getting to the top by working numerous hours each day. These people are walking hard, but forgetting that there are people at the bottom of the social ladder whose basic needs are not being met. There are several causes that have been linked to poverty. Unemployment or having a poor quality job results in poverty and limits a person’s access to a decent home and society norms. Also, low levels of education plays a significant role in poverty. Today, the minimum education level you need is a high school diploma. Without that diploma, your career opportunities are very limited. Statistics have shown that women are at a higher risk of poverty than men, because they are generally paid less and aren’t seen as beneficial in the work place. People have a stigma that women belong in the home as caretakers, instead of physically working to provide for their families. Disability and race could also limits one’s ability to work and put them in a situation of poverty. I believe poverty can’t just be associated with the individual, but more so economically as well. More developed countries tend to prey on less developed countries for land and goods, because these things are cheaper and will save them money. I see this as exploitation. For example, the United States performs a lot of business operations in Mexico. There, they are only required to pay the workers $0.75 an hour, whereas, here, they would be required to pay minimum wage or
