IMPOTENT. PRIVATION. DISTRESS. Three words describing the low of the lower class. The world refers to it as Poverty. Poverty is hunger. Poverty is lack of shelter. Poverty is being sick and not being able to see a doctor. Poverty is not having access to school and not knowing how to read. Poverty is not having a job, is fear for the future, living one day at a time. Poverty is losing a child to illness brought about by unclean water. Poverty is powerlessness, lack of representation and freedom. I met face to face with this beast on my most occasional trip to one of the most overpopulated countries in the world, the Philippines. There I learned many things that I had no idea about. Not from the elderly there, but the people who are

I chose to meet the people who live on the side streets to experience a day in the life of many of these people living in poverty. The walk wasn’t far, in fact, anywhere you walk in the area of the city I came for vacation was crowded/occupied with homeless people. Right when I arrived, the first thing I smelled is the trash that people discarded. Smell so horrifying, it was like eating a burrito full of beans. Smell like a hot sweaty teenage boy who just finished his workout. Smell like the all the cities in the country were in one place living next to you. The place covered with all sorts of dirty soil, and who knows what feces. The faces of people covered with a kind of dirt. Not only were their faces covered with this kind of dirt, but also their bodies as if they rolled down a hill. Why were they are in this position is a question I ask myself often. There are so many opportunities that can be taken away from this world. There should be no one living in this state of …show more content…
Nothing changed. Their place still smelled similar to garbage. Their faces covered with dirt. The shacks in which they live in still untouched. Kids were surrounding me asking me for food and or money. A few still had no clothes on. Their houses/shacks still have dirt on the floors where there were no manned floors to begin with. Still no grass growing. Just plain poverty at its finest.
The journey back from the village of homeless people shocked me. I couldn’t help but think what they’re future would be like and if they could survive long enough to see their kids become successful. I may have been the same person going into this situation, although my perspective on life changed. This directed me into a path I hope to be successful in.
All of the experiences I had in the Philippines led up to my realization that I could be a difference in the world in the future. I have taken upon the medical field path towards my future due to these experiences. In realization of this I take my school work more seriously and put myself on a path of success by studying more and doing my schoolwork more efficiently and effectively with more effort. I joined an art club for two years to strengthen my leadership. Also have been in the Unite n’ Inform club to get a better understanding on how the world works. My current enrolled courses are rigorous enough to challenge and prepare me for my future in college. These courses not only

I will discuss about the “Michael and Danielle and Family” video link. This couple with 6 children was renting from a landlord that let the house go into foreclosure. They were given 2 hours to evacuate their home, and were forced to live in a hotel. Although the statistics given by Berne et al., were from 1990, even current statistics still show that approximately 900,000 homeless people each year are families. Although Michael has a job, it still wasn’t enough to keep a roof over his family.…

Although classified by multiple set of measures, most recent literature has universally recognized different theories of poverty (Dalton et al., 2011; Anand and Lea, 2011; Sun & Sun, 2012; Pridemore, 2011; Alkire & Foster, 2011; Lustig, 2011; Walby et al., 2012; Ravallion, 2011; Azariadis, 2011; Spears, 2011; McBride Murry et al., 2011; Collins, 2011; Walker & Day, 2012). Astutely, most of social theory researchers have been able to differentiate between theories that root the cause of poverty in individual deficiencies as seen by the conservative and theories that lay the cause on broader social phenomena as seen by the liberals or progressives. On one hand, a quasi-collective set of beliefs perceived poverty in the American society under…

Since President Lyndon B. Johnson declared war on poverty in 1964 during his union address, there has been an increase shift in our attention in trying to lower the poverty rate in America. Today, the poverty line depends on how many people live in a household but these thresholds are too low and need to be higher. The poverty line should be a clear distinction that shows that if one is to be below it they cannot afford to pay for the all necessities in order to live. Living above the poverty line, even if it is just above, should mean that one can pay for bills that are necessary to live even if they are just making by doing this. While the poverty line has increased due to inflation in wages, what it has not accounted for is the increase cost in living.…

There are many things that stuck out to me after watching that video. When I was watching it though, there was one particular quote that made me think for a second. This is the quote where the cartoon of Confucius says "In a well governed country, poverty is something to be ashamed of" and he continues to say "In a badly governed country, wealth is something to be ashamed of" (Poor Us). When you have a well governed country, it is important for the poverty levels to be as low as possible. There are many jobs dedicated to this very issue, and there are many different standards and ways we measure our standard of living here in the United States.…

Poverty serves no positive function for society, indeed, it impairs the well-being of all. Poverty is the result of the inability to produce goods and services desirable by others in an amount of time acceptable to others. The determinants in the United States are wage restriction laws such as the minimum wage or in some states the requirement that if there is a union all must be in the union, and education. Education is the primary determinant but it certainly isn't a sole determinant. In the United States, each year of education past the sixth grade results in an 8-12% geometric increase in pay per year.…

Effects of Poverty from a Micro and Macro Perspective The topic of poverty has been around for many of years, and so has the relationship between poverty and behavioral theory. Behavior theory can be used to understand the impact of poverty amongst children, and it focuses on their lack of financial resources, poor housing and inadequate education. Piaget’s behavioral model also examined the connection between a child’s environment and their response to their environment (Saul, 2007). Piaget’s is used to help gain an understanding of why children that live in poverty suffers from mental health issues, low self-esteem and poor education.…

It is a well-known fact that those suffering from poverty are statistically disadvantaged. According to the Chicago Tribune, between January and October of 2017, Chicago had 560 homicides, about 95% of those being in Chicago’s less affluent southside and westside neighborhoods. The association between concentrated poverty and criminal activity is statistically strong and although there are many lurking variables, (like gun attainability and segregation) poverty has proven to serve as both an income and death gap. However many Chicago businesses are not helping those in need.…

I have always wondered why people end up on the streets homeless. In Africa where I spent much of my formative years, people used to rely so much on each other to the extent of taking care of a relative or relatives who may be needy. But that has changed over the years due to the high number of needy relatives, especially orphans of the HIV/Aids scourge. The dreaded epidemic ravaged most 3rd world countries leaving a trail of homeless children who later grew into homeless men and women. Having had the advantage of growing up in a 3rd world country, I witnessed poverty and homelessness first hand.…
