Over the years it’s been estimated that at least 200,000 Canadians are either going through homelessness or poverty. We see them everywhere holding cardboard signs begging for food or money to survive. Even though it’s part of all three levels of government it doesn’t make the problem better it’s actually making the solution worse.
What causes Poverty and Homelessness?
Every time I would pass by a homeless person or family, I sometimes wonder how they got to that position. Most of the time it’s caused by the house pricing in Canada. As time is passing by, the amount of money you would have to pay for a house are increasing, up to 170,000 dollars in Toronto and 1,008,000 dollars in Vancouver. Increasing house prices isn’t the only problem that would cause homelessness and poverty, but also low income and job loss which both leads to poverty. 35% of people are homeless due to job loss or low income. Although the government is trying to make programs to support the problem, we Canadians can’t see the difference. Being homeless could increase chances of taking drugs or having to deal with mental health problem. People who are experiencing homelessness are always at risk of death, illnesses like pneumonia, cancer and hypothermia are one of the most common diseases homeless people would get including skin infection.Actually, about 700,000 homeless people would die from hypothermia, because of the cold weather during the winter.
