Poverty and Children in the United States Essay

The United States is the richest nation, yet millions of Americans live below the poverty line and millions more struggle every month. The children in society today living in poverty is increasing daily. The majority of these children are from single-parent homes where sometimes parents are not working or have become disabled and therefore cannot work. Children who are raised in foster care and leave as adults do not have strong relationship ties most of the time and are at an increased risk for experiencing poverty, early parenthood and homelessness (American School Board Journal, 2007). The reason for most of the poverty in the United States is due to low family incomes.

And families can also sign up to receive monthly allowances for getting health insurance to help subsidize the monthly payments. This assures when their children are sick there is insurance to cover when normally a family would have to pay cash. This could mean the difference of paying for the doctor or the rent and most would choose paying the rent to have a roof to live under. Poverty can be a vicious cycle. Children who grow up in poverty are more likely than other children who are not poor to make lower earnings as an adult. This affects the workforce and the productivity of those working. This in turn can lead them to not being able to afford health insurance and if they were to get sick and not be able to pay their rent or mortgage, they find themselves living in bad neighborhoods or even homeless. This can lead to them to stealing to be able to eat and feed their families and possibly even end up in jail, among other things. When it comes to children living in poverty and going to school, this creates a new set of conflicts. There are individuals that believe because a person lives in poverty or comes from a low-income family that they are not intelligent. This is certainly not the case. A child's lifestyle, to which they have no control over, is not directly reflected on how smart they are, or what they can accomplish if given the chance and
