On briefing the topic of poverty alleviation as a strategy to combat environmental degradation, I insist to the Director of the Africa Division and senior policy advisors of the World Bank that this strategy is worthwhile and that poverty alleviation is a strong method that would aid in the fight against environmental degradation. In most post-industrial or service based economies present day, environmental preservation and the reduction of ecological degradation is a primary concern going forward. To sustain future populations and to mitigate poverty worldwide, efforts need to be made to help poverty stricken areas to develop to achieve sustainability, which ultimately leads to reduced environmental degradation. Contrary to what governments or news sources may try to tell you, rich are to blame for most environmental degradation issues, not the poor. The rich have their hands in lands that could be used to alleviate poverty. Own industrial power plants that create environmental harm and spillover into poverty stricken areas. By mitigating poverty as best, we can support alleviation as a means to combat environmental degradation. The Indian state of Kerala is a case in point’ reinforces the point that poverty is often an over-generalized concept. Poverty to us Canadians may be completely different to the idea of poverty from a Kerala, Indian perspective. Kerala, a socialist state of on India’s southwest coast has sustained thus far in their socialist model is being challenged by India’s developing economy, and as the economy changes, the tariffs and trade regulations that have sustained Kerala will make the Kerala way of life become more ‘unsustainable’ overtime. As the Indian economy further industrializes around Kerala, Kerala is also pushed to develop more heavy-industry in hopes of achieving economic self-reliance. In a case like Kerala, it shows how our changing economic models, such as industrialization and post-industrialized economies put pressure on less-industrialized economies due to pressures of trade and externalities. It is important to define which is the most poverty stricken areas before attempting to support sustainable development in their region, some areas although we as North Americans may consider them in a ‘poverty-like’ condition, they will defend it politically as their way of a socialist style governing and livelihood. It is necessary to support extremely poverty stricken areas as they may not be aware or understand the risks
