Pousette-Dart

This painting was painted from 1941- 1942. This style blossomed in New York during WWII. I think that WWII greatly influenced Pousette-Dart to paint this mural like painting. The dark colors represent the hardships of war, and the definite abstraction represents chaos. There looks to be a tear of blood, and that seems to represent the blood shed. If you look close enough, there seem to be faces hiding in the chaos. Pousette-Dart may not have meant them, but they are most definitely there. It looks like there are musical representations, such as music notes and small disfigured instruments. The small amount of color in this painting suggests hope in the war, the break in the storm. The suggestion that we can win, and with the help of many, many

The museum I visited was the Polk Museum of Art in Lakeland, Florida. There were three main exhibitions open, but the one I spent the most time in was the Bill Rutherfoord: Allegory of No Region. The exhibition was a culmination of eleven large scale pieces of art by Bill Rutherfoord that were done over an eight-year period. The main series, Allegory of No Region, contains paintings that take the viewer through a series of colorful allegories full of symbolism, form, and narrative. Rutherfoord, an American artist from Virginia, references contemporary and historical issues spanning from the 18th century to present times by taking the African folk character Brer Rabbit on an epic adventure through time.…

In Decatur Boarding the Tripolitan Gunboat the men are shown in the painting is fighting for both freedom and money. This oil painting was painted by Dennis Malone Carter (1827-1881) in 1878. It appears that one side of the war being portrayed is much more justified and honorable than the other and they both have their own reasoning for their stories. No matter the side, in the end, war will have the same result when being fought over to this degree, death. This is a Marxism painting, that analyzing the relations between the social classes and the interactions and conflicts between the two.…

Everyone desires a perfect world, yet they cannot get it. This is shown in Kurt Vonnegut’s “2B0N2B” as everyone hides his or her problems in this “utopia” world established in the short story. Vonnegut in “2BR02B” establishes a theme that there is no such thing as a utopia by using imagery and conflicts. The story opens up to the world being as it says, “… was perfectly swell.”…

This painting draws evident comparison to Napoleon I on the Borodino Heights (1897) in that Vereshchagin, using the accounts of Napoleon’s generals, painted Napoleon sitting with a look of frustration and an entourage of officers behind him as he attempts to watch what would be the bloodiest battle of the French invasion. While both paintings show emperors watching devastating battles, the focus of the painting is revealed by the framing of the scenes. Napoleon’s retinue takes up most of the canvas and Vereshchagin paints the scene with enough detail that the focus of the painting is the presence of the very human experience of frustration and weakness in times of difficulty that negates the typically idealized representations of Napoleon.…

In the featured mural “Man at the Crossroads,” the artist, Diego Rivera, justifies his thesis on a world in utter social turmoil. During the early 1900s, social upheaval spread across the world like wildfire, with a particular focus on WWI and WWII as a method of change in government. The mural addresses issues that Rivera has seen as not only his political views, but a means to move forward to the future. Therefore, Rivera addresses this fact in the title of his piece, there is a crossroad implied for a brighter technologically advanced future or a continued path of turmoil and destruction. In other words, Rivera wants onlookers to view his work as a way to think about how political choices and leadership of societies can affect civilization…

It is filled with imagery of death, suffering and pain. Otto Dix was a German, who strongly disapproved of war, as is shown in this painting, Dix felt that the war was pointless, which is shown with the unnecessary gore and despair shown in his work. This masterpiece is also very representative of the suffering of those who fought, boldly shown in the painting, contrary to the patriotic and honour the leaders wished the artists to show in their work, and which offended many people who believed those who died were shamed by this…
