With potholes being one of the leading causes of car accidents in major American cities such as New York City, Los Angeles, and New Orleans, many would think that the federal government or even state legislature would be doing something to advance the American highways and state roads, but most aren’t. Potholes can be as deep as 10 inches and can span feet, which would cause damage to the car’s shocks and suspension, putting more people at risk than just the driver of the car. The way the American roads are constructed had mostly caused the appearance of potholes on almost every street in every town. The construction method used in the U.S differs a lot to the roads in Europe. German highways, called Autobahnen are created without the thought of money, but with the thought of safety. Instead of the weak 4 to 16 inches (10.2 to 40.6 cm) that America uses to create the subbase layer of our roads, the German government used 80 cm (31.5 inches) of the subbase concrete. The speed limit. In America, the speed limit depends on the kind of road, usually between 25 and 90. In Germany, all Autobahnen have unrestricted speeds. Without the worry of being pulled over by the police, people tend to all go about the same speed on the roads. Also, with the licensing tests stricter over there, the people have to really be top notch to be on the roads.
American infrastructure is subpar at best. With potholes on every road and 1.3 million people dying from car accidents each year, the government needs to step up and fix the roads to insure the safety of millions of current drivers and the next generation of drivers to come.
