Social Workers Role In Health And Social Care

Social work is a regulated profession used to promote social change, protecting the wellbeing of children, adults, families and the further surrounding communities. Social workers are uniquely educated to support every individuals needs when overcoming some of life’s challenges. In Wales, social work is under the legislation of the Care Council for Wales. “People of Wales can count on social services being provided by a professional, skilled and confident workforce” (Care Council of Wales). The care council of Wales has a code of practice which all social workers are required to abide to. A social worker will become very familiar with other resources in order to refer their service users to. Social workers need to be able to address legal issues, for example, providing reports in court in order to determine the best outcome possible in relation to their clients.
Advocacy services are also very important within the role of a social worker. Advocacy services are provided to help people who are particularly vulnerable to society. An advocates role will include to help the individual argue their case when they are unable to do so. When visiting a child in their home you are required to assess the degree of danger to which the individual is potentially exposed too. This can be quite stressful and put a social worker under a lot of pressure as a child’s wellbeing is in their hands. A social worker will then need to make effective risk assessments and then make the decision as to whether perhaps a care package needs to be put in place to help develop parenting skills (for example), potentially the decision needs to be made to take the child out of home and into care or whether the child is perfectly safe and happy in their current home. They will need to have the confidence to confront these challenging situations, critical thinking and analysis are vital key skills to have been overcoming these sort of challenges. They will need to have evidence and research in order to complete these decisions – including a lot of paper work!
