American Hookup Chapters 7-9 Reflection Paper Chapter 7 explains the phenomenon of unequal pleasures between men and women consumed with hook up culture. There is an orgasm gap. In hook-up culture, the male orgasm is the pinnacle of the sexual act. There is no to little reciprocity involved in the arrangement. Men only feel the need to give a woman an orgasm if they are his girlfriend.…
Allison was the victim and you would think she would receive words of encouragement for coming forward, but it was the opposite. Yet, you may wonder, but how does this institutionalize gender? Well, this institutionalization of gender in Allison’s case, is giving us the impression of the opposite of what we should do. That is to speak about sexual assault.…
In Daniel Luzer’s article “Is Alcohol Really to Blame for the Prevalence of Sexual Assault on College Campuses” published on November 18th 2013 by Pacific Standard, the truth about alcohol and sexual assaults on campuses across the nation is shown. After a statistic of women getting sexually assaulted in college was shown, people were concerned. People soon asked the big question, why do they occur? The U.S. Department of Justice soon stepped to answer, why? Alcohol.…
In the article “College Women: Stop Getting Drunk,” Emily Yoffe from Slate primarily focuses on the story of female students being exposed to potential sexual assault as a consequence of alcohol drinking. However, former colleague of Emily Yoffe strongly argues in the article “To Prevent Rape of College Campuses, Focus on the Rapist, Not the Victims,” Amanda Hess agrees some of the ideas from Yoffe, but she opposes that female college students is not the one who should be careful about sexual assault due to the overdose of alcohol. Hess points out that college should focus on the male student who is primary threats to the plastered girl to prevent a potential threat of sexual assault by strongly punishing and controlling them in college campuses.…
The persuasive purpose of my essay was to persuade and address my audience on the issue of perpetrators use the complications that alcohol adds to sexual assault to justify their sexual assault actions and claim to be the victims. While the compelling issue in this situation is that, we are not certain that some of these claims perpetrators make are valid. The intended academic audience for this paper is college students and individuals who study and observe the character and behavior of a perpetrator. I chose this particular audience because I felt like this is a complicated issue that needs more observation and analysis to further decide if perpetrators use alcohol complications to justify their actions. My discourse community value the knowledge that they have about the perpetrators and that perpetrators should be punished when found guilty.…
One of the most offensive crimes committed in our society is Sexual Assault. Like other physical assaults, it is an act of violence. It not only has physical and psychological effect on the victims, but it is also a consequential threat to our society. It has become a focal point of public concern for the past couple of decades. The demeanor of both men and women are viewed differently in society when it comes to sexual relationship.…
Out of the 26 episodes of Criminal, I chose to listen to Episode seven: J.R.R. Ziemba, which was produced on June, 30, 2014. This episode was about a young man, Reese, living in a small town who was out walking downtown at night, which was something that he did quite frequently. He had just passed a gay bar, though he said that he never really had been worried about his safety before until he saw a man propositioning/haggling some young men. Reese’s impression of the man was that he was an older black man that could have been potentially homeless. He felt that the man believed that Reese was looking for sex.…
Fisher and colleagues, there are a handful of assessed risk factors that come with campus rape. These risk factors include prior victimization to college, substance use of alcohol and drugs, age and the year of study in college, race and ethnicity of victim, the residential status of the victim, sorority membership, dating violence history of the victim, consensual sexual experiences, and attitudinal characteristics of both the victim and the perpetrator. Substance abuse can play a large part in the raping of females on campus because it impairs their ability to resist, fight back, or call for help. But according to this final report on campus sexual assault, women of different ethnic backgrounds and/or of the lower classmen classification were more at risk for rape on campus. In terms of the residential status of the victim, those living in a sorority house and members of sororities were more likely to be coerced with drugs and alcohol, and therefore under more risk for victimization of rape.…
In a vast majority of cases where a woman reports sexual assault, the first questions that are asked come along the lines of “Were you drinking? What were you wearing? Was it really non-consensual?” There is a cultural belief and standard way of thought that if a woman “provokes” it, by, for example, dressing provocatively, being open about her sexuality, or even “leading a man on”, that she is asking for sex and that it’s not “really rape” or “legitimate rape” because she implied “yes” with her actions. This culture is perpetuated blatantly and with great magnitude on college campuses by the Greek system – specifically, Fraternities.…
One and five college students experience sexual assault during their college career. Today, one of the most dangerous realities that young adults face is the risk of sexual assault (Colleges, 2016). Sexual assault on college campuses has always been a major issue. In the past, more often than not, sexual assault on college campuses were pushed under the rug, making it seem as if they did not occur.…
Over the past decade, sexual assault has become very topical and newsworthy. The spotlight has become brighter with what is seemingly a constant stream of reports on college campuses and churches across the country and throughout the military. Thanks to a renewed effort to create awareness, legislation (Title IX) and more aggressive prosecution, women (and men) have become more comfortable reporting such abuses. One ugly theme with respect to sexual assault, abuse, or rape is the misconceptions and stereotypes that it carries. It was somehow the victim’s fault.…
Introduction Perceptions about the severity of rape encompass considerations about the liability of the victim and perpetrator, assessments of motives, and numerous psychological consequences (Ben-David & Schneider, 2005). In a rape-supportive culture, minimizations of harshness of rape can be asserted by refusal to label the situation as rape or by characterizing the situation as not being psychologically damaging which is a violation of the rights of the victim (Glass, 2002). Traditional sex scripts of men and women create a rape-supportive culture in the United States (Check & Malamuth, 1983). Rape is a coherent extension of our cultures sex role socialization process that legitimizes coercive sexuality.…
Introduction Picture this: You’re walking down the street and you see a couple arguing. You then witness him push her down and start an onslaught of punches. You’re going to stop them correct? That depends. If you are by yourself, there’s an 85% chance you’ll help or get help.…
Controversial Problem on College Campuses Is everybody born with a purpose in the world? Throughout our lifetime, we come into realization of why we are here. First, we grow into toddlers thinking, “I must have that toy!” like it is our life’s goal; then we graduate from high school visualizing about what college holds for our future; next we start a family and eventually a routine work schedule. But is this all we can expect?…
Drunk or not the victim is still not responsible! The victim is clearly unable to give any kind of consent whatsoever. Lets take the Steubenville case in which two boys were found guilty of raping a girl a 16-year-old girl while she was unconscious and intoxicated. The mainstream media attacked the victim and accused her of ruining their future careers since the boys were loved athletes in their school. People were present during the rape incident and no one ever said anything.…
