Potato Child Observation

Decent Essays
In the beginning, the child was playing with Mr. Potato Man on the table. She was sorting items based on color and placement on the body to dress the potato. I asked a few questions about how many ears, arms should she include on the potato. She responded correctly and was about to tell me how many objects of something was on the table.
The next activity, the child was playing on the floor in the building area. First, we started to play with the pirate objects, then we moved to the car wash and farming toys. The child was counting how many cars arrived at the car wash and how many answers could fit in the barn. This child displayed knowledge of her colors, rote counting, sorting, and problem-solving skills.

The activities children do are similar to what Frazier and his friends did – they explored and went on adventures. For some children, they become invested and develop an interest in a particular subject/field. In this case, Annie Dillard’s “Hitting Pay Dirt,” presents a little girl who desperately wanted a microscope. After her parents got her a kit on Christmas, she played in her basement all winter and late spring until she discovered an amoeba and wanted to show her parents. As symbolic the amoeba was to Dillard, it was not as significant to her parents.…

The cognitive growth of children, to the chagrin of their parents, is a relatively messy process. The adult mind can become exasperated with a child 's perceived inability to see the world as the parent does. However, a child 's mind must start with the rudimentary stages of thinking to build a base upon which further thinking can be built. In the preoperational stage, children are becoming capable of crude abstract thought with the ability to reason, and symbolic function which allows them to “represent something that is not physically present” (Feldman, 2014, p. 173). Nurturing this stage requires the recognition of an underdeveloped mind, and using tools to help the mind develop.…

In this theory learning is viewed as schema or mental constructions and learning is defined as changes in the child’s schemata. This theory focuses on the information coming in, that information being processed. Learning is then defined by changes in the child’s schemata. Children in the age group of three to six years can develop this theory through using an activity of one to one matching. This can be done after the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears where the children can be asked to go to the dramatic centre and set the table using dolls and bowls.…
