Pot Madness Artwork Analysis

The artwork I have chosen to analyze is a wood-fired sculptural piece of pottery. The work is listed as taking the form of a blade, and was crafted by Daniel Johnston. The piece is a part of a curated show entitled Pot Madness, which was on display in Hunt Gallery. Pot Madness showcased a small portion of Bill Potter’s collection of wood-fired pots. The blade itself stands upright at thirty-five inches, one of the taller pieces in the collection, but is quite narrow both in width and depth. The placement of the work in the gallery downplayed the imposing nature of the blade, as it was placed closer to the ground, while many of the larger pots were placed on high pedestals. This choice, however, was made by the curator of the show, Nancy Ross, not the artist, but it is still relevant to the analysis of the work. One of the most notable elements presented in this sculpture is the scale. Standing at nearly three feet, the work defies function, especially as a blade despite its classification. This immediately sets it apart from the other pots in …show more content…
While there is some variety in hue and value, the colors work in harmony with each other. The closest thing the work has to contrast would be, again, those dark patches. This works well with the line and shape to create a very organic form. Going back to the idea that the piece is more representative of a leaf rather than a blade, these colors enhance the forms to evoke a feeling of walking through a forest.
There is something humble about this piece that is a product of all of these elements working together. The work is wholly harmonious, it isn’t striking, but it doesn’t feel like it was meant to be. It isn’t intended to turn heads or draw a crowd; it simply is. Of course one could see beauty in it, but it feels reminiscent of the beauty one finds in a sunset or a crisp autumn wood. The essence of the natural world is exuded beautifully by this

The work that I am analyzing is Bathsheba After the Bath by Jan Steen (1626-1679). I believe the meaning of the painting shows exactly what women had to endure to be presented to a man of high royalty and had no rights in the matter to reject his advances. The gloomy colors in the painting correlates with the emotion that Bathsheba expresses. Examining the painting I found interesting props surrounding Bathsheba and the maidservants. The painting tells the story of how King David sent for Bathsheba.…

This paper will analyze and compare two works of art from Hampton University’s Museum. The first is John Biggers’ Baptism, and the second Lloyd Toone’s Natty Dred. This paper will specially analyze themes of culture and labor as they pertain to both works of art. John Biggers’ Baptsim is a colorful painting depicting quite surrealistically several aspects of African and African American life. It was created in 1989 and it’s medium is oil and acrylic on canvas.…

I found my visit to the Tampa Museum of Art to be enjoyable. I really enjoyed seeing older pieces of art like the red and black figure vases and greco-roman statues. I loved the few ancient marble pieces they did have and I wish there were more of them. I do however wish the museum’s collection was larger and I was surprised when I came into to the last section of the museum to realize that it was the last room. Even though the museum did not have a large collection, I did still the enjoy the works they did have and took time to admire all of them.…

Although the statue of Augustus of Primaporta and the statue of Doryphoros bear some minor differences, the similarities between the two statues are remarkable. To the naked untrained eye these two statues might even be mistaken from the same culture. However, the statue of Augustus is from Roman culture and the statue of Doryphoros is from ancient Greek culture. These two works of art seem very similar because Roman art and culture borrowed many ideas from the Greeks and sculpting is just one of them. Augustus of Primaporta was sculpted in the early first century during the Julio-Claudians era in Musei Vaticani, Braccio Nuovo, Rome.…

One may also say that the variety of shapes are the variety of horrific characteristics that described his wife at that time of his life. Uniting the variety of elements and principles of design, the ones brought up within this assignment and the others that can be inferred from the artwork itself, the overall artwork provides a redeeming beauty. It is like the uneasy characteristics come together and soothe things out, and provide a beauty that is in the eye of the…

I was drawn to this painting due to its simplistic design and vibrant colors that forces the viewer to keep looking. The painting attracted my attention and every time I looked at it, I felt as if I found something new about it every time. As I continued to examine the painting its complexity continued to grow with every minute that I looked at it. Also, the size of the painting was large compared to the others in the gallery immediately making me feel that the painting had more significance and prestige than the others around it. The combination of the designs, the color and the size, overall made this painting an obvious choice for my research paper.…

Furthermore, the history and culture of the Head of Ife is the piece of art that brings identity to Nigeria and West Africa as a whole, for the head is often compared to the art that came out of ancient Greece and Rome. Though what differentiates it from that of all European art is what the artist had to work with. Unable to either afford or come in contact with rich crafting materials like marble and stone, West Africa utilized that they had in order create a metallic mixture that could mold to the cast. When reviewing the complexity of this assignment, my goal was to create something that was original and that I would not suspect another classmate of mine would create. Between my love for history and respect for the arts, I wanted to challenge my artistic self into examining an under-recognized work of art and suggest its creative elements that are often overlooked.…
