Early in the play Lady Macbeth showed symptoms of postpartum depression. Symptoms of postpartum depression may include “excessive irritability or anger with partner, baby or other children, guilt or negative thoughts about being a bad mother, excessive worry about the baby’s health and worrying that she may harm the baby” (Wynne- Jones, 67). In the play the Doctor said, “Remove from all means of annoyance and still keep eyes upon her. So good night. My Mind she has mated and amaz’d my sight I think but dare not speak” (5.1.65-68) The Doctor says this is only because they did not have the treatment for what Lady Macbeth was going through. The Doctor thought that letting her rest and keeping harming objects away from her would help but it did not. Recommendations for the treatment of postpartum depression may include “Where woman is already taking an antidepressant consider current symptoms, risk of relapse, medication-specific risks and the woman’s preference when deciding whether to stop her medication” (Wynne-Jones,67). The recommendations of this treatment would have been great for Lady Macbeth, but the fact of the matter is that during the Renaissance era they did not have the resources to provide
