The Ironton Train Depot, completed in 1907, was used by the Norfolk and Western Railway Company for both passenger and freight trains until it closed in 1969. Almost a decade later, the depot was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Since then, the 5,000-square foot building has housed a number of restaurants, including its current tenant, “The Depot.” The Norfolk and Western Railway originally connected Petersburg, Virginia with City Point (now-called Hopewell), Virginia and was called the City Point Railroad. When Lord Bute lost power in 1763, King George rose to reign and saw a large war cost needed to be taken care of, and used colonists (being British subjects) as a scapegoat to pay them off. Many Americans felt their rights had been violated and burst into protests. The first act was prime minister Grenville's sugar act. It restricted customs services salary that tended to be four times higher because of smuggling and bribery. It also reinforced taxes on molasses from other countries, which many colonists had been ignoring for years , but found a loss at doing so now.…

During the twelve years that followed the French and Indian War, Americans were convinced that they should fight for independence. The French and Indian War ended in 1763, and before then the colonists were loyal to the British Empire. However, the British parliament and King made a series of decisions that changed the minds of the colonists. The placement of the Stamp Act in 1765 angered the colonist because Britain was taxing them and abusing their power just to make Great Britain revenue, the Proclamation Line of 1763 angered colonists because it meant that the colonists could not move West, and the enforcement of mercantilism angered the colonists because the colonies existed to enrich and benefit Great Britain, which affected the colonists’ economy.…

Stamp act- The Stamp Act of 1765 was passed by the British Parliament which meant all Americans were required to pay tax on each individual piece of paper they used, such as legal documents, newspapers, license etc. The money that was collected by the tax collectors was used to help protect the American frontier near the Appalachian Mountains. The actual cost of the tax was evidently small but what made the law so cruel to colonist (Americans) was not the instant cost of the tax but the standard it seems to set among the colonist.…
