The history of food waste can be traced back to the late 1800s. During that time, only very little food was wasted because food was expensive and people were not able to afford discarding or wasting anything (Schneider 2010; Atwater 1895). Therefore, people used leftovers as much as possible. For instance, leftovers from the upper class were collected and sold in restaurants for lower classes (Evans, Campbell & Murcott 2012).

However, during the period of post-World War II, the problem of food waste started becoming more and more serious. With the end of the wartime, people were no longer patriotic to conserve food for soldiers and armies. Thus, the consumer culture was changed to abundance and waste (Thyberg & Tonjes 2016).
