A number of stressful events can be attributed to PTSD, and truth be told these events go all the way back till when we first roamed the earth. Things like a hunting trip gone wrong can make PTSD occur, to even horrific events such as the holocaust. Today a new version of the DSM exists it is called the DSM-5. Each DSM book has a version that contains every psychiatric disorder that is prevalent during the time period it was created. The DSM-5 recognizes PTSD as a disorder, and it gives eight possible conditions of PTSD to be determined by a medical professional. CRITERIA NEEDED TO DETERMINE PTSD 3 One of the first criteria of the DSM-5 for diagnosing PTSD is either directly experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event in person. For example, if a soldier is in a Humvee convoy in Afghanistan and they drive over an improvised explosive device they may very likely obtain PTSD because a severe traumatic even has just occurred. A variety of these things can occur such as the inability to experience positive emotions, insistent negative thoughts about others or oneself, and even the ability to not remember a certain event. The reason why someone with PTSD might suffer from some of these things is that they try to detach themselves from the world, to try and suppress their memory. The next criteria for determining PTSD is to check for arousal and reactivity among an individual. People with PTSD may experience sudden angry outbursts, self-destructive behavior, sleep trouble, and concentration problems.
