Post Strep Infection

One reason I am personally unable to juggle as easily as a normal person is due to an illness I contract occasionally that I currently am on amoxicillin for, called Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections, also referred to as PANDAS or more commonly, Post Strep Infection. Among other issues that I can have, it leaves my dopamine completely unregulated, causing random spikes, which can cause me to be irritable about very small things. Dopamine not only creates positive emotions, it also is what gives us interest, motives, and the drive to do something. It also is used in natural muscle movements, and has a large part in muscle control. This is shown in me by the worst case of PANDAS I ever had, which occurred back in fourth grade, the first diagnosis I ever had. …show more content…
This was going on for about a month, and I started to have strange twitches in my hand, which led to my tests being done, because at one point, I had no control of my right hand for almost an hour. Due to this lack of focus in my mind, I have a hard time doing complex motions, such as juggling, and sometimes can show a decrease of interest in certain things that I normally perform well in, such as school. While I don’t have those tremors anymore, the clouded and slow mind is still an ongoing issue that I have when I have this infection. Due to a lack of ability to focus, I can have a hard time learning how to do a new activity. Luckily, I don’t always have PANDAS, but I do now, and when I have it, it can cause issues. One reason that it can take a while to detect is that it takes four weeks before the ASO antibodies created by my body to fight this infection reach their peak amount, which means I can have it for a couple weeks, and a blood test won’t detect

    • For this write-up, I will be focusing on strep throat in adolescents and adults, and will expand on the background of this sickness, prevention, and treatment. Strep throat is a bacterial infection caused by streptococcal bacteria, and it generally occurs in the pharynx. Since it is a bacterial infection, it can spread from person to person extremely easy. This may be why adolescents are very susceptible to this illness, because they tend to share drinks, food, and other objects with different people. These objects can then easily act as a vehicle of transmission for this bacteria, passing it from one person to another.…

Aicardi-Gutieres syndrome (AGS) was first described in 1984 as a familial progressive encephalopathy, and has since been reported in several cases from various ethnic backgrounds (3). The condition is considered a Mendelian mimic of congenital TORCH infection, and is characterized by spasticity, dystonia, delayed psychomotor development, chronic cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leukocytosis, and leukodystrophy. Microcephaly, hepatosplenomegaly and cortical blindness can be seen in severe cases. Clinically, children can present just with non-specific seizures and developmental delays, and CSF leukocytosis or abnormal brain MRI may go undetected unless a specific work-up is undertaken. Chronic inflammatory skin conditions are commonly reported, including…

If you didn't want to go in to the doctors and be seen by others you could do an at home test which is just as fast and effective (“5 Reasons”). In one of our sources, it says “there are numerous rapid testing options that can provide you results in as little as 20 minutes”(“5 Reasons”). The only con to this type of testing is that it is less accurate than going to the doctor but it is still very accurate. The home swab test is more than just going to the doctors, but is well worth it and will be very reassuring.…

Physicians can diagnose a person based on these signs and symptoms, as well as any history available to them on the exposure of these ticks. Immediately after the exposure to the ticks, two-step blood tests may be negative because antibodies can take weeks to develop, which is why diagnostic blood tests only taken a couple of weeks after a bite are recommended. While simple blood tests work well, ELISA and Western-blot blood tests are recommended to recognize the disease as early as possible to determine whether a person is infected. If one suffers from neurological symptoms or joint…

The neuro diagnosis I am choosing is Multiple Sclerosis (MS). I am choosing this because I was actually tested for this disease, so it’s very important to me. Multiple Sclerosis is when nerve cells are damaged in the brain and spinal cord. There is no cure as of yet, but there are ways to prevent the severity of the symptoms. According to Penn Medicine, medications are used to slow the disease, “steroids are used to treat the severity of attacks, and certain medicines are used to prevent muscle spasms, fatigue, urinary and mood problems” (Penn Medicine,…

By the end of the month and even after I was so used to brushing with my left hand that I do it still at times.
