I often felt over looked because I was darker, but learned to use it as an advantage. I was encouraged by my mother and became more confident in my skin. My brothers and sisters rarely pointed out my skin tone difference, and encouraged my other attributes like my high cheek bones and pointed nose. My family was always loving spiritual. Our religion played an important part in our lives. My mom would reference” As for me and my house we will serve the lord.” Growing up within my home morals and spirituality played a major part in my development. My parents taught lessons from the bible which allowed us to have reasoning and understanding of situations that could happen to us.

I find it hard writing this paper knowing that I just lost an important part of me, my dad. My dad taught with tough love. He was an all-around Airborne army man who served his country in Germany and Panama. He instilled respect in my siblings and I. We knew to respect our elders and treat others the in the same way we would like to be treated. My mother is another important aspect of my life, she is my best friend. My mother taught me to have compassion for others and to love those around you even if they do not love you. I gained my strength from my culture. Being African American was not my choice but I would not change it. We as people have to push through adversity which made me resilient and able to bounce back from any situation. Although I gained strengths from my culture I gained weaknesses as well. I learned throughout the years that I do not trust people.
