Do I really need to go to college? That is the question many students ponder coming out of high school. In the essay, “Is College for Everyone”, Pharinet challenges the idea that perhaps college is only for a selected few. Whether you go to college because you genuinely want to, or because you want to appease your parents, college might not benefit you the way you think it does. Though Pharinet uses logical reasoning to support her claim such as the use of logos, ethos, pathos, and rhetorical questions, her argument is weaken because of her lack of credibility, failure to support her ideas, and bias opinions.…

This may not seem important to a specific major a student is considering but it helps them develop their knowledge about life overall. This can help with decision making in a student’s regular life and working life improving not only their life but other people’s lives too. Helping to develop these simple skills can also help a student learn what they are interested in which can help decide some of their career paths instead of going into something they don’t enjoy. Just like the Chinese richest man Li Ka-shing saying: "Knowledge Changes Fate", college is a great place to help students explore what they want to do in the future and experience many new things. During four or more years in college, students have time and resources to explore many different areas in the humanities, social sciences, science, and professional fields such as business and engineering, and to take a variety of academic courses that will provide important background for particular careers. Students who exercise their minds and develop strategies to deal with hard problems over four years of college are likely to graduate with many skills and strategies that can be transferred to dealing with tasks later in life, both on the job and in their personal life. This will surely contribute to the progress of the world. Derek Bok claims, “The most obvious purpose of college education is to help students acquire information and knowledge by acquainting them with facts, theories, generalizations, principles, and the like” ( Quote.com).…

The Value and Purpose of Postsecondary Degrees Students of for-profit colleges are only 11% of America’s higher education population yet they account for 44% of federal student loan defaults because the value of their degree makes them the least desirable to be hired by employers (Harvard Law Review, 2015). This is also a product of aggressive recruiting techniques that target military members by offering a fast, convenient path towards an accredited degree. As it turns out, a degree awarded from a for-profit or “degree mill” university has no more value in the civilian world than a high school diploma and these businesses continue to capitalize on enlisted Sailor’s dreams of furthering their education. Senior Enlisted Leaders (SEL’s) must educate their Sailors about the prerogative of for-profit universities before authorizing a degree plan.…
