In the editorial “Post-secondary education: are we lemmings?” Tom Abeles outlines the growing disparity of the cost and elitism of post-secondary education in regards to astronomical tuition costs and employers demand for degree carrying employees. Abeles brings up the notion that in an age where technology is so prevalent why are we still putting our students through an archaic means of learning. The article brings up an interesting notion of low cost online education, where your competency is based on mastery and not the hours spent in the classroom. This idea of ‘badging’ is a low cost alternative that does not require the majority of fixed costs a university endures, such as professors and schools; as well as costs associated with heating,…
For many Canadians, the increases of post-secondary costs have made it progressively impervious to pursue. When the Conservative government was in power, billions of dollars were disposed on non-refundable tax credits that offer no aide to students and their families in need (Liberal, 8). Trudeau promises to provide direct help to students from low to middle-income families to assist them in paying for their education to ensure that debt levels are feasible. Trudeau plans to increase the maximum Canada Student Grant for low-income students to $3,000 per year for full-time students and to $1,800 a year for part-time students. In addition to these expansion, the Liberal government plans to increase the income thresholds for qualification, granting more Canadians students access to even larger grants.…
13 October 2016. This academic article focuses on the history of the growing student loan debt and how it has become a negative asset in the growth of college and student financial freedom. The author starts out by highlighting the beginning of student loans in 1965, where the government created the Guarantee Student Loan Program. This program helped people get the higher education that the government felt everyone deserved.…

Students across the country are facing a mounting challenge upon graduation. This challenge is not one that is easily surmounted or circumvented. The challenge is also not limited in scope to one social class or geographical region. The challenge facing more and more students every year is student loans. The loans themselves are not the issue, but rather the excessive amount of debt that tends to follow.…
Majority of the people in the United States today have debts from their college education. The ridiculous amount of college tuition has put many Americans into a tough situation. Politicians and public figures have urged the youth of America to pursue a college education. However, private and public universities continue to inflate their college tuitions giving students no choice but to pay up for a “brighter” future. This continuous trend has buried newly grads with an uncontrollable debt.…
In the USA Today article called “More Government Aid makes College more Expensive,” the author talks about the government’s plan to fix the student loan issues. Each idea gets criticized and rejected for either pushing the problem on the rich or raising taxes. The authors of “More Government Aid Makes College more Expensive” and “The Student Debt Crisis” agree that there are more and better options that can be used to solve the…
It’s hard to believe that once upon time, Americans did not have the dreadful worries of finding a way to prepare for the financial necessities for college. Now, college is becoming more of a dream rather than a reality as high tuition rates becomes the number one reason why Americans are not advancing themselves into higher education. In some cases, there are college students who receive full-ride scholarships to the college they desire; however, the majority of those who do go to college do not obtain the same luck. Those students who do continue their education and go off to college find themselves short of financial aid, out-of-pocket cash, and even scholarships. This causes students to resort to taking out a student loan.…
My post-secondary educational goals is to graduate from college with a master’s or doctorate's degree in Native American, Ethnic, or American studies. I have yet to decided what career I would like to pursue. However, I know that whatever it may be, I imagine myself working to help the Native people and will pursue that in whatever form that may be in. I believe I have a role as a Native American to attended and graduate college and apply that degree to improving life on the reservation for Native students and Native citizens. Despite roadblocks and situations where all odds could be against me, I proceed to carry on because I’m driven by my own interests and ambitions to keep pursing a better education for myself.…
Every semester I ask myself the same three questions and the longer I have been pursuing post secondary the more I think about the costs of post-secondary in comparison to the benefits of my degree. I work part time at Bed Bath and Beyond to help my parents pay rent and keep food on the table so every time I look at class registration I always artistically stack my classes like Greek columns to grab as many hours as I can at work. My father always says that you can’t do anything without money and it’s the truth you can’t, and it shames me because the academic route I decided to take isn’t known for the Steve Jobs of the world but rather the eco-terrorists and political upstarts. Public policy has always been my passion because of the social…
Introduction: Take a second to consider what is more helpful to Canada and its citizens: Canada spending tax revenues paid by Canadian citizens on the first two years of post secondary education, or spending tens of billions of dollars on a war machine that is not even useful to us. That’s right, the Canadian government is planning on using up to $50 billion of tax money earned by the citizens on new war machines, even though there is currently no threat to Canada, the last being over two centuries ago. Does it not make more sense to provide Canadians education that could lead them to strengthening our economy? This is why I think the first two years of post secondary education should be free; the amount of debt/people with debt will be cut…

It discusses how the majority of policy proposals are set up for students with higher loan balances rather than those with lower balances.…
Student Loan Debt Crisis Specific Purpose: By the end of my speech, the audience should be persuaded to support student debt forgiveness programs. Thesis: Student Loan Debt is harming student’s financial stability and undermining their long-term life goals. Introduction: In fall 2014, I transferred to Harold Washington College after being out of school for two years. That same year student loan debt within the United States surpassed $1.1 trillion (Frizell) and some of that debt is my own.…
In that time minimum wage in Ontario has gone up from $10.25 per hour in 2010 to $11.00 per hour in 2015 . A majority are paying their own way through university, most of these student are doing is on minimum wage salaries. Having this makes it so that the students have to turn to OSAP funding and opening a line of credit to pay for tuition fees. In turn causes many students sink into long-term debt that will take many years to pay off. Many European countries like Germany, Finland, Sweden, and more offer postsecondary education for free (Scholars for development, 2015).…
