In today’s society, racism, prejudice, and stereotyping is often frowned upon and seen as politically incorrect. This wasn’t always the case, because just four decades ago, racism, prejudice and stereotyping was seen as a social norm. However, thanks to great leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, Andrew Goodman and many others, we as people are allowed to live in a more diverse and welcoming environment that gives equal rights and respect to everyone no matter race, size, or country of origin. Although it is important to recognize the progress we have made throughout the years, it is also crucial that students are aware and understand the numerous obstacles that people of color had to go through, to further appreciate…
February 7th, 2016 there was a stabbing in Cazenovia, a student of ethnic diversity was stabbed behind subway around 2am. On the 9th, a racially slurred, inappropriate, and hurtful Craigslist response was posted online that went viral within the community and many black people expressed they have not felt safe since. The following day, the campus held a dialogue circle to discuss race and diversity, sadly the majority of people who attended were ethnic minorities and the few white people in attendance were mostly student leaders. In class, Thursday, February 18th, we discussed civil rights, social rights, political rights, and slavery. In lieu of recent events and our class discussion on Thursday it is important to discern the difference between…
Post-racial America, That’s Funny. Has racism in America disappeared ever since Barack Obama received presidency in 2012? Many people have come to the conclusion that racism would diminish electing a black president. Giving a black man, somebody who can relate to racism and discrimination, the power to run the country gave opportunities for problems regarding race to be solved. Instead, racism seems to continue to ravish.…
Persuasive Essay Ethnic Studies is the interdisciplinary study of differing race, ethnicity, and Nation, but also sexuality, gender, and other such markings and power, as expressed by the state, by civil society. When the schools in TUSD didn’t have the Ethnic Studies Classes they’re graduation rate for Hispanics was at 50 percent, but after they started having the Ethnic Studies Classes the graduation rates for the Hispanic students went all the way up to 93 percent, which was a very good improve that benefited a lot of people. The Ethnic Studies class also helped so many of the students that didn’t try at all and that they didn’t even care about school. The Ethnic Studies Class encourages students to get out…
Racial justice is difficult to maintain if people are not consistent with challenging laws and institutions that perpetuates racism to occur. For racial justice to be present in America, there should be equity for everyone despite their social and class status. This can happen if people of color and white folks are aware of their difference through education on people of color’s history. However, before envisioning what racial justice would look like, we must first discuss steps on how to achieve this hope. Eliminating carceral states and building love amongst humankind could be a start of this process.…
Students should be required to take courses in minority or ethnic studies as part of all college degrees. The unique value of ethnic studies in colleges and universities is that these studies promote respect and understanding among races, support student success, and teaches critical thinking skills. Ethnic studies by and about racial minority groups presents a different narrative that is shaped partially by histories of oppression in the United States. as well as by the intellectual and cultural resources and traditions of those communities. Ethnic studies evolved from the demands of Black Americans for an education that is relevant and meaningful, that affirms their identities and selfhoods, and that works toward human liberation.…
Do not judge a book by its cover. Nearly everyone has heard that quote multiple times. Some people might follow that saying and read the back of a book before actually deciding if they like the plot of the book or not. Others, however; ignore the saying and pick a book based on the pictures shown on the front or back cover. This cliché can apply to more than just books.…
The socioeconomic divide exists to this day. In the American Life Podcast, the school Michael Brown went to at Normandy, one of the poorest cities in Missouri, has a large population of lower-income Black people. In January of 2013, Normandy lost its accreditation from the state due to its lack of graduating students and school organization. Therefore, Missouri made a transfer law that gave the students permission to transfer to a nearby accredited school for free but Normandy only provided one transportation to the school, which was in a “white” neighborhood. In the American Life Podcast, Nikole Hannah Jones, an investigative reporter states: “Normandy officials chose a district called Francis Howell.…
As far as american history and civil rights goes, the education system should not teach us that black and white racism was the only issue at the time. In fact, schools managed to ignore the civil rights struggle involving Mexican Americans, Asians, LGBT community etc. I became heavily interested in this topic my first semester here at state once I took a latino studies course where we touched bases on the Chicano movement that occurred in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Growing up Chicano this issue and movement hit home and intrigued me a great deal considering in school I 've only ever learned about black and white racism during the civil rights movement. This topic should be further explored considering all throughout our years in school we are forced…
Dear White People (2014) is a movie based on a fictional Ivy League college called Winchester. The school is predominantly white, which leads to several culture clashes that result in a “Release Your Inner Negro” party held by one of the most prestigious houses at the school. The movie explores racial identities of the diverse black cast in order to create a social commentary on issues that students still face today. The main student we follow is Sam White, a biracial film and media student who is a big advocate for black student rights and the BSU. I believe this movie is crucial and should be implemented within every school curriculum because it gives examples of racism, microaggressions, and many other race based aggressions that should…
The arise of racial discrimination since the 1800’s has been a prominent and serious subject in societies throughout the world causing public unrest and violence. There have been marches, protests, charity events, gatherings, and many more attempts to try and abolish racism, but racism is not an obstacle that can just be completed with and forgotten. Racism is a disease that is spread rapidly and is impossible to erase entirely. Many individuals believe that racism is a choice people make, but in reality it is the influences surrounding those people as they are being raised. Many children have the same beliefs as their parents about racism because they feel as if their parents opinions aren’t opinions, they feel as if they are…
An Ever Changing Country Although it has been decades since slavery ended, racism is still a profound controversy in the United States today. Charles Blow describes some of these levels of racism and its effects on people in the United States in his article “White America’s ‘Broken Heart’”. The article, as can be deciphered by the title, is about how white Americans today are handling the changing situations of equality in the United States. Blow published this article February 4, 2016, on The New York Times’ Opinion Pages on their website. Many Americans assume that racism is almost completely gone in today’s society, but Blow believes that it still lingers and is affecting the health of Caucasians in America.…
Our country has a very rich history, or so we are taught. We are taught that english immigrants battled native american savages and the british for their freedom, but what they don’t mention is the fact that the native americans were only protecting their land from invaders. History books tell the story of how wealthy plantation owners helped build our economy. However they don’t mention that our economy was built off the backs of hard working slaves. This is the history of our country and what helped create modern day white supremacy.…
Less than fifty years ago slavery and segregation was apart of our nation's everyday life. The definition of racism is one race thinking they are more superior than another. In the United States of America, racism has been a huge topic among the people (“Glessner”). Racism is all over the news while some people think racism has died down others believe that it is still a problem today. Racism along with segregation is not only a thing between African Americans and whites but it is within all races in the world.…
“It is anti-American!”, “Go back to your country to learn your history!” These and many more negative comments are said by people against ethnic studies. Over the years, there has been a controversy on whether ethnic studies should be banned or not. On this paper, I will discuss the history and on whether or not Arizona’s ban on ethnic studies has a positive or negative effect on students’ success.…
