For this week’s assignment, I was given information on eight types of fallacies listed in the video by TheHtownusa. I have chosen to do my paper on the Post Hoc Fallacy, because it is one I have personally used on numerous occasions. In this paper I will tell you the meaning of this fallacy and the error in reasoning that happens while using it. You will also find a few strategies that will help me in trying to avoid this fallacy. With this I will learn what this fallacy is, how this error is committed, and how to avoid this fallacy in the future.
The Post Hoc Fallacy is derived from the Latin “Post hoc, ergo propter hoc” meaning “after this, therefore because of this”. The Post hoc fallacy is, as defined by Labossiere (1991), when it is concluded

    The best way to persuade people to believe or accept an idea is to make them believe that they themselves came to the conclusion alone, and the best way to achieve this goal is to preset them with the information which supports the claim one is attempting to make. Mr. Steven Cummins demonstrates this skill when making the statement, “just building supermarkets to increase access will only take you half of the way in improving diet” (Cummins 16) by adding the figure “half of the way” he is able to support his claim that the addition of a grocery store does, in fact, not change the eating habits of the residents close to the grocery store. By adding an additional layer of support to his claims Mr. Steven Cummins is able to strengthen his overall argument. Another Mrs. Laura McKinney has, through his own separately conducted study, also come to the conclusion that the addition of a simple grocery store is not nearly enough to make a significant impact on food desert residents, “our study shows that food access is shaped by multiple interacting factors that are often not directly related to food outlets’ location or what food is available at these stores” (McKinney 41).
