allows for discussion and promotes citizenship within the students. Critical literacy recognises that students enter the classroom with many and varied voices (Kalantzis & Cope, 2012, p. 145). Theorist such as Michael Apple and William Ayres advocated a ‘true education’ where students became self-activating explorers not merely receive training like obedient soldiers (Kalantzis & Cope, 2012, p. 148). Macedo and Freire believed that learning processes that made meaning and placed the learner squarely in their world, allowed for individuals that could change that world (Kalantzis & Cope, 2012, p. 148). Learners would use their varied identities to identify topics to analyse, documents to discuss, points of view to consider. The Foundation year level description of the Australian curriculum uses a range of literary texts that brings together the voices of such peoples as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders as well as contemporary world texts, including those from and about Asia (Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority, 2016). It is now a fundamental of Australian education that ‘Post Modern Education’ brings together the rich tapestry of students’ lives, validating their identity (Kalantzis & Cope, 2012, p. 149) and enabling them to be ‘in-ward looking’. They can safely develop their own stance or attitude towards others as well, regardless of their disability, ethnicity or sexual orientation (Kalantzis & Cope, 2012, p. 149). Critical Literacy Pedagogy also has a focus on digital media in the 21st Century classroom.
