As a girl who grew up in the south her whole life, certain foods such as fried chicken, sweet potatoes, sweet tea, cornbread, eggs, bacon, and collard greens, is the typical food that northerners believe that all southerners eat. However, that is not the case for all southerners, there are many cases of people like myself, who don’t eat southern food at all, even though we were born and raised in the south. We are going against the stereotype that all southerners consume greasy unhealthy food, by not eating various food groups, such as meat, dairy, eggs, fish, honey, or anything that comes from an animal. So, contrary to popular belief, modern southerners have now defined food in more healthy and ethical ways and it shows a new clarification …show more content…
Latshaw titled “Food for Thought”, is giving a series of statistics of southern food and how much is eaten by southerners. In one chart the author tests the statement of southern food consumption by residence in the south versus outside the south in the spring of 1995 (Latshaw 113). When asked how often does a person eats southern food, sixteen percent who lives in the south says they do, while four percent who don’t live in the south says they do (Latshaw 113). Even though these numbers were recorded in 1995, it is still shocking that the numbers are only separated by twelve percent, meaning not a lot of southern people often eat southern food. In the same chart the statistics show that only thirty-six percent of southern people seldom eat southern food, which mean not very often, and thirty-five percent of non-southern people seldom eat southern food (Latshaw 113). As one can see, the difference is only separated by one percent and shows that even twenty-one years ago, southern people’s eating habits wasn’t much different from northerners, and as time goes on and more research is conducted, the numbers of consumption of southern food by southern people will
