Over time the world seems to have become more and more negative and divided. This needs to be put to an end. Maybe we can’t just go and change the entire world, but by starting small and united the staff and students of Higley High School we can get a head start. We need to unite Higley. There are hundreds of thousands of tasks we can do to spread kindness and unity throughout the school and eventually the world.
Positivity. There is a power in positivity, it can be easily contained or spread. I propose that we chose to spread it. Sometimes it’s the littlest things that can turn our day around. By doing little things to brighten peoples days without expecting anything in return, we can make a huge impact. Have you ever been in the drive-through at Starbucks and when you try to pay for your drink, the cashier tells you that the person in front of you payed for your order? I was with my mom when this happened to us. It completely made our morning and we decided to pay for the people behind us’ order. The cashier told us that we were about the tenth people to pay for someone else’s order just because one person decided to be kind and do a random act of kindness. Kindness can spark a chain reaction. At my old school we did something called Rachel’s Challenge. Rachel Scott was a victim in the Columbine shooting. She had written an essay about starting a chain reaction of kindness and seeing how far it could go. In her essay she wrote “I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion, then it will start a chain reaction of the same. People will never know how far a little kindness can go.” Rachel Scott has impacted thousands of people and has inspired people to be kind. I hope to inspire you to do the same. You do not have to do something big to make a big impact, you just have to show a little

Numerous factors relate to whether or not someone will engage in prosocial behavior. Grant and Gino (2010) noted that giving thanks to people for their efforts lead to an increase in helping behaviors. Therefore, based on this concept, companies who thank their employees are more like to have employees partaking in the appropriate behaviors. Furthermore, children who are thanked positive behaviors (e.g., sharing a toy), will be more likely to exhibit those…

Kids across the nation are standing out and making a difference. Whether its just picking up around the community or starting a foundation people can make a difference. Many people think kids are just in the way and don’t ever actually make a difference in their community. Like dominoes falling one after another, a person’s action can affect someone else’s life. For instance, in an accident, more than one person’s life gets changed. The impact of one’s actions can be positive or negative. Doing good things can change many lives. A fundraiser is an example.…

Often times when we hear the word ‘service’ we think of doing something for someone other than yourself. In that moment of kindness, you may not think that your small gesture or the work you are doing for someone could have an impact on someone’s life or even the world. Throughout the text, The Work by Wes Moore, the idea of work has a much bigger meaning that states having a life that matters is important. He believes that living a life full of meaning, purpose, and service are the keys that allow you to become part of a bigger picture.…

My eighth grade religion teacher us a short story about a man who would walk along the sea shore tossing starfish back into the ocean. Although his actions didn't have a large impact, he still did them in kindness. This story encouraged me to look for small instances where I can do something to help. One of the activities I do that is substantial to me is volunteering as a Kettle Host during Winter for the Salvation Army. Through Christmas Kettles, I collect donations from the society to help give back to the less fortunate in our community. What volunteering for the Salvation Army has taught me is that even the smallest effort can make a tremendous impact. When I first started off as a volunteer, I did not feel motivated enough to believe what I was doing would truly have an impact. I had this mindset which led me to believe that the happenings in our community did not concern me, although, I began to have a change of opinion as I kept volunteering.…

Volunteering at the homeless shelter is one of my favorite things to do. A few weeks ago, on a serene Saturday morning, my family and I volunteered at Loaves and Fishes. It was special to see just the sheer amount of people who had come out to volunteer on that Saturday. If you think about, they could’ve been doing anything on that Saturday morning. Yet, they decided to help give back to their community.…

Not only does volunteering make you feel physically and mentally happier, however, it creates a pool of volunteering groups. By volunteering, you can make you world a more humble place.
