Change: it’s something that many people don’t like, but also something that people all have to live with. In This Side of Home, the main character, Maya, sees her community changing, and she doesn’t like it. But, as the story develops, Maya realizes that change doesn’t always have to be a horrible thing. A quote from the book to support this idea is, “You should come out to get to know our neighborhood. Some of these places have been here for-what?-four years now and you’ve never set foot in them. For someone who loves her community so much, you sure don’t support it” (Watson 62). This quote shows the theme developing because the main character is very close minded when it comes to the change in her community. However, her sister points it out to her that she can’t claim to support the community, but not shop at any of the new stores or go to any of the new things that have been added. Her sister wants to make it clear to her that people can’t just always stay the same and not change, because sometimes change can be good. From this quote, it can be assumed that the main character is very passionate about her community, and her sister is trying to tell her that people can’t just support what they want when they want. They have to be willing to accept change and go with it. She’s making the main character see the change in a more positive light, and showing her a new perspective to look at it from.
