Positive Youth Development Paper

It is important for those working in a youth development setting to know their specific audience while implementing Positive Youth Development. I successfully defeated directing my first year of 4-H camp. I am anxious and enthusiastic to start planning for next year, thus my audience for this paper is going to focus on camp counselors ages 15 to 18. I am choosing this age group not only because they make such a positive impression upon the younger youth, but also because I think they have a lot to offer when it comes to planning certain aspects of camp. As anyone does after running any kind of large event, I have been reflecting on the things I need to improve and do differently for next year. Next year, I would like to use these counselors …show more content…
After talking with several of the counselors at the end of camp, I learned that there are things that have been done for the past several years that the campers along with the counselors do not enjoy. My ultimate goal for camp is to create an environment that the campers want to come back to. Equally and almost more importantly, I need to create an environment that the counselors enjoy and want to come back to. I could not have a camp without this group of 15 to 18 year …show more content…
According to Karen Pittman (1991), Positive Youth Development is “the ongoing process in which all young people are engaged in meeting their physical, personal and social needs and in building a set of skills and competencies that seem useful in their present lives and in the future”. In addition to Pittman’s definition, William Damon (2004) emphasizes that we should view youth as resources for their talents, strengths and interests. I like to emphasis what Damon states in his definition of positive youth development for my target audience. The first module of Ages and Stages helps us as youth development workers with a better understanding of our audience. This information is the foundation for us to have a practical understanding of what certain age groups can handle cognitively, socially, emotionally and physically. Without this knowledge and understanding, I might not receive the full potential I possibly could from my camp counselors. With McFarland and Huebner’s (2008) research of youth development I am able to understand where these camp counselors can use their strengths in the camp planning process next year. This specific group of teens can demonstrate the following social, emotional and cognitive strengths I see as most important while planning next year’s

On my one and only vacation last summer, I got the privilege on going to my first Younglife camp. The camp name was Carolina Point in Brevard, North Carolina. At the camp they had many activities: swimming, go-carting, disc golf, mountain biking, zip-lining, paddling boarding, and hiking. My favorite part about this trip was the day we took a whole camp trip to hike the nearby mountain. At the camp they had some kids with disabilities that couldn’t necessarily get up the mountain by themselves.…

As a Fish Camp counselor I want to gain a stronger network through the entire camp and develop a bond with others beyond who I have met my first two semesters of college. I want to be a mentor for the next year freshman as they transition into college just like my DG-discussion group-parents did for me. I’d also like to develop my leadership qualities even further through the entire process. The counselors that were in my camp had strong relationships with one another and that is something I want to be apart of. I want to help the Class of 2020 in anyway I can because the counselors my year influenced me significantly and helped me transition into college.…

I want to be in the Leader's In Training program because Camp Mendocino is teaching youth how to live a healthy life at a young age. This camp helps the upcoming youth live in reality instead of the virtual world and ties into my overall life goal of helping Americans understand what it means to live a healthy life physically and mentally. This is important to me because I have dealt with depression and how unhappy I was with myself as a person. From the negative experience I’ve had with depression I don't want any child or teen feel like they are unworthy of the life they are living. By working with Camp Mendocino I will be helping the youth understand how to have a healthy state of mind by encouraging campers to deal with negative feelings…

Most teenagers would probably tell you that the beginning of their adulthood was marked by having to do laundry for the first time, or being able to drive alone, or perhaps no longer sitting at the children's table at family events. But for me, it happened this past summer, when I made the very difficult decision that I would not return to Coleman Country Day Camp. To those who were not fortunate enough to have grown up at summer camp, this might not seem like such a big decision to make. But Coleman was my outlet, my second home for ten consecutive summers and spending those two months anywhere else seemed inconceivable to me.…

In the world today, there are many young people who are idle, lost, abused, confused, and scorned, hence the reason I choose to become a Youth Event Planner and my research question is “How is event planning effective for Youth Ministries”. According to the International Institute of Event Management (Campbell California USA), there are five common mistakes in event planning and ways to avoid them. Mistake number one is the failure to allocate the right resources, with the right skills; mistake number two is the failure to keep a track of changes to the scope of the event; mistake number three is ignoring Murphy 's Law; mistake number four is the lack of experienced event managers, and mistake number five is simple process mistakes by not following…

Young people have continually been a huge subject in our society. People often define youth as just a period between childhood and adult age, but youth is not simply that. There can be a variety of different ways in which we can identify youth and its true meaning in relation to different aspects and influences in our surroundings. Youth can be argued as a social construct rather than a universal concept because everyone has different experiences in their lives and not everyone experiences youth. It is important to understand every aspect that contributes to what youth is, because there is so much more to youth than a group of people or an age.…
